Diabetes & Diabetic Footwear

╬ The deficiency or insufficient production of insulin leads to an increased level of glucose in the blood. This condition is known as Diabetes Mellitus.

╬ Diabetic shoe, which is sometimes referred to as extra depth & width or therapeutic shoes, which are specially designed shoes, or shoe inserts, intended to reduce the risk of skin breakdown in diabetics with co-existing foot disease.

Why one need Diabetic Shoes?

╬ Diabetes damages the nerves that can occur to the foot and not be detected which is called peripheral neuropathy.

╬ Diabetes also affects the circulation. Poor circulation can affect the ability of the body to heal when damage occurs.

╬ Ill-fitting shoes which rub or pinch the feet excessively can lead to ulceration and foot injury that might cause amputation of foot or leg.

╬ Diabetes can also affect the joints, making them stiffer.

╬ Other diabetes complications that can also affect the foot, for example, kidney disease (affects proteins that are involved in wound healing) and eye disease (can't see the foot to check for damage).

Benefits of Diabetic shoe Supple leather conforms to the contours of the foot, enhancing

comfort. Seamless lining, made of soft fabric, and padded with foam,

provides excellent protection. The only diabetic prefab orthotic with rear foot support that

offers an arch filler and long lasting support. Cushioning sole, with a true Toe-Spring design, softens the step,

and helps propel foot forward. Extra-depth design offers a loose fit and freedom for toe

movement. Two removable spacers (1/16” and 1/8” thick) allow the

adjustment of the space inside the shoe for a perfect fit. Hidden depth design offers the appearance of regular depth

shoes.

Findings1. Lack of awareness about Diabetes mellitus among

patients.2. Economic condition of our people is not good

enough to get proper medication and proper footwear.

3. Strict diabetes control not given adequate importance by patients.

4. Even many doctors are not even know the importance of Diabetic footwear.(they take it lightly).

5. Less Diabetic footwear manufacturers.6. No proper knowledge of diabetic footwear.7. Lack of research in diabetic footwear.8. If diabetic shoes are available, patients would buy

medicated shoe, as they faces problems normal footwear creates problems.

9. Some canvas made shoes are used as diabetic shoe.

Page 13: Diabetic Footwear

Recommendation1. If the seamless lining are not made, seams are given

always outside of the shoe as the abrasive force is less felt in outside.

2. Don’t use Neoprene adhesive in diabetic shoe manufacturing as it make the seam more rigid and reduce the breathability and rise the chances of shocking.

3. The third generation polyol adhesive, which is made from bean can be used, it is already used in green footwear.

4. Insert disc like spindle of a microcellular into the heel to set the shoe or feet uniformly in the rough surfaces which avoid the trembling risk.

5. While padding, use a fabrics under the foam to trap the produced heat above the ling layer, which reduces the heat contact.

ConclusionA comprehensive concept of the medical, functional and technical requirements for this type of footwear is still lacking till date. A proper research is really needed today in order to control the situation. People as well as doctors should be educated properly the importance of this type of footwear. As a person suffering from diabetes definitely need to consider using Diabetic footwear, instead of normal footwear. These types of footwear offer good feet support and they are quite comfortable to wear. They are good to keep your foot healthy and maintain a good lifestyle.
