Definitions as per IEC 61439:

IK (Protection against mechanical impact):

The degree of protection provided by an ASSEMBLY enclosure against

mechanical impact, if necessary, shall be defined by the relevant ASSEMBLY

standards and verified in accordance with IEC 62262.

IP (Protection against contact with live parts, ingress of solid

foreign bodies and liquids):

The degree of protection provided by any ASSEMBLY against contact with

live parts, ingress of solid foreign bodies and liquid is indicated by the IP

code according to IEC 60529.

Where a characteristic numeral is not required to be specified, it shall be replaced by the

letter “X” (“XX” if both numerals are omitted).

ASSEMBLIES can be divided to attain one or more of the following conditions between

functional units, separate compartments or enclosed protected spaces:

Protection against contact with hazardous parts. The degree of protection shall be at

least IP XXB

Protection against the passage of solid foreign bodies. The degree of protection shall

be at least IP 2X.

The degree of protection of an enclosed ASSEMBLY shall be at least IP 2X, after

installation in accordance with the ASSEMBLY manufacturer's instructions. The degree of

protection provided from the front of a dead front ASSEMBLY shall be at least IP XXB.

NOTE The degree of protection IP 2X covers the degree of protection IP XXB.

For ASSEMBLIES for indoor use where there is no requirement for protection against

ingress of water, the following IP codes are preferred:

IP 00, IP 2X, IP 3X, IP 4X, IP 5X, IP 6X.

For ASSEMBLIES for outdoor use having no supplementary protection, the second

characteristic numeral shall be at least 3.

The IP of Schneider-Electric switchboards is up to IP55 and of

Universal Enclosure is up to IP66.

The IK of Schneider-Electric switchboards and Universal

Enclosure is IK10 for which equipped with plain door and IK08

for which equipped with transparent door.
