AQUARIUM

Picture created by one of the students in the project.
Write your story: The aim of this project is to make students from
different schools (in different countries /states) create a story. The first
class writes the beginning of the story. They draw pictures and they read
their text. When ready, their work is uploaded so that the other schools
can read and listen to it. Then, the next school continues the plot and
then the next, and the next, until all the story has been finished.
Schools involved: The whole project involves 289 classes from 10
different countries. In the story I chose (The Girl Who Saved the
Aquarium) there are five different classes taking part: Borneo, New
Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts and California.
Platform: Wikispaces.
Tool: Voicethread.
Contributions: Each class will be writing ONE group paragraph(s) for the
story (not each student). The first class will write the intro paragraph(s).
Then the next class will read the paragraph(s) and decide how they want
to continue the story. This will continue until the last class on the list
writes the ending and gives the story a title. The paragraph(s) will be
typed onto a Wiki page. Each class will also need to send the 3 pictures
to the Teacher Leader. The pictures should illustrate events in the section
that each class wrote.
There is a deadline for each school who, after finishing their work, should
check the corresponding box to indicate that their work has been done.
Edition: Students from each school get to see in the Wiki the contribution of their peer schools and
so they can contribute to the story. They also use different colours to see who wrote what.
Coordination:
I liked: I think the way the project is presented is clear and very intuitive. Besides it is very well
organized. From the very beginning the deadlines are set.
The fact of having students draw their stories and read them out loud is a great way of
motivating. Not only does this project develop their imagination, it also increases their motivation,
improves their writing, reading, listening and speaking, teaches them how to work in groups and
as a group and gives them the opportunity to know more cultures.
Improvements: I think it would have been interesting to have children from a wider range of
countries. The majority of the schools in this project are from the USA and even if they are from
different states, their culture does not differ much as the school from Borneo does.
