Problem definition

O Pay not offered related to individual output.

O Improper balance of individual workload.

O Development of standard cost model for

service provided.

O Office work involves significant amount of

“mental work”, non-repetitive and irregular jobs.

Page 3: Work measurements for office workers

Steps Involved

O Job detail is found out.

O An estimation is done by breaking down work contents of job into elements.

O The time for each work is estimated at standard performance.

O These total job times are then added to get total job time.

O An allowance for relaxation and necessary contingency is made to give standard time.

Benefits

O Distribution of working time makes it possible to

identify extremes of short and long hours of

work.

O Can be applied for non-repetitive jobs and jobs

having long cycle time.

O Improved labor control.

O It is economical as it uses standard data to fix

standard time for each job.

Potential obstacles

O If Standard data is not available for a job then

standard time is fixed by work-study engineer.

O Not accurate compared to scientific study time.

Work standard achieved while measuring work time

O Quantity output

(output per unit of time)

O Quality output

(accuracy and acceptability of work)

O Descriptive standards

(Identified what is acceptable in terms of the descriptive nature of something in an office, such as furniture)
