Our Students are Digital Natives

Page 3: Web 2 Faculty Forum

Students have changed. Today’s students:•Are digital natives who live in a world where technology is omnipresent. •Are not the people our educational system was designed to teach.•Have not just changed incrementally from those of the past…our students have chanced radically.•Represent the first generation to grow up with this new technology.•Think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors.•Are all native speakers of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet.

(Prensky 2001, p. 1)

Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser.

Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.

Have you ever wanted a web-based word processor where multiple people can login and share ideas? Writeboard does that and a whole lot more. You can start a board very quickly and easily and invite your co-writers to join in and help brainstorm with you. RSS updates are available for your board so you know when changes have been made, a very nice feature. Another great feature is the ability to have multiple versions of a document so you can roll back if needed.
