Universal Design for Learning (UDL)By Lesley Spaeth

What is UDL?0We know that all students are different

0 Need to recognize diversity, background knowledge, preferences in learning, & language use

0Therefore, we need to remember that when designing curricula

0Provides a process for creating a curriculum that enables all individual students to learn content & skills with enthusiasm

0Ensures students will have full access to content with minimal special accommodations

Guidelines for UDL

0 Class climate0 Interactions between teacher & students and peer-to-peer relations0 Physical environment/layout of classroom0 Informational resources & technology0 Teacher feedback0 Assessment of students0 Accommodations provided by teacher

These are components of classrooms and learning that need to be considered by teachers when creating their curricula and lesson plans

based on the Universal Design for Learning.

Specific Ways to Implement UDL 0 Provide multiple examples0 Highlight important content

ideas0 Utilize multiple formats for

material0 Respect background

knowledge0 Provide opportunity for

practice0 Give opportunities to

demonstrate skills0 Offer choices for students0 Provide different levels of

challenges for all types of students

RESULTS

Students of all different backgrounds will be able to more easily understand any sort of course content. This will be because material will be presented in a way that satisfies all the various learning needs of individual students. Therefore, students will have more enthusiasm and motivation to learn – making the classroom have an overall better environment.
