Unit Topic

My unit topic is World War I with a focus on the advancement in technology that aided both allies and

enemies in the war.

Analyze the Learner

• The class that I will be teaching to will be a group of high school seniors around the ages of 17-18 years old, of a predominantly white area in West Virginia, who are taking my class out of the necessity for college, and want of the class. This is not a core class that every student has to go through so I know I can teach at a more in depth level because the interest in the subject is higher in these students. However, being teenagers, my students still have the tendencies to get distracted easily, thus, having to make the assignments a little more hands on and less lecture.

Objective

• The main objective I strive for in this plan will be, to get students to fully understand why World War I was the way it was and how it got to be that way. I also want them to be able to apply, or compare and contrast not only the major but also minor differences in World War I and our modern day war. I want my students to be able to see what advancements in technology have been made since 1918 that allow us to do what we do compared to what people then had.

• Day by day breakdown:

• Monday:

-Students will start with learning the basics of the war; this includes when it started, how it started, who started it, when America intervened and who allied with who.

• Tuesday:

-Students will spend the day in groups discussing with each group member the technologies that may have been used in the war. Each group will be given a different country to focus on during the remainder of the week.

• Wednesday:

-Students will be given guidelines on the culture(s) of each of their countries to follow by for the week. On this day, they will learn the basics of what technologies were used during the first world war. They will then go amongst their groups and apply the knowledge of technology to their country.

• Thursday:

-I will go further in depth of the technologies of World War I and finish with who won the war, who lost, and what the final/overall outcome of it was and what effect it had on today’s world.

• Friday:

-Each group will be asked to come up in front of the class and use some form of media and material to present what they have learned about their country in World War I.

Use of Technology

• Youtube: Interactive/Documentary videos about World War I is a great tool to use for both auditory and visual learners. It also gives students a first hand look at how the first world war, or let alone, all wars are.

• Blogs/Social Media: Students can participate in blogging or form Facebook groups so their group can be home and come up with plans for what needs to be done for the final project on Friday.

• Google Earth/Interactive maps would be a good way to show students where exactly wars were fought, how far soldiers had to go to fight, and what terrain they had to fight in.

• Interactive models of each different form of military technology that was used during the first world war is a great way to get students on a more in depth level of what each object was and how it may have been used.
