Welcome to SussexLife at Sussex

Your time as a student is one of the most exciting and challenging periods in your life, so choosing

the right university is an important decision. Our prospectus describes the opportunities available and gives you an idea of what life is like at the University of Sussex.

At Sussex we offer you plenty of variety in your studies. We break down barriers between traditional subjects, allowing you flexibility and choice. We encourage intellectual breadth and self-reliance – skills that are highly prized in the world of work, as well as the academic world.

We are a leading research university and the benefit of cutting-edge research to our undergraduate programmes is invaluable: in the calibre of our teaching staff; the availability of innovative and fascinating project and dissertation work; and the opportunities it provides to learn from leading researchers at the forefront of their subjects.

Sussex is proud of its reputation as a cosmopolitan community. We actively encourage international students, mature applicants and students from backgrounds with no tradition of university education. Sussex has a diverse student population, enriching the experience of all who study here.

Our campus is situated in beautiful parkland next to Brighton – the city by the sea. The friendly and informal campus life at Sussex is a reflection of the community at large: Brighton is a lively and exciting place.

I hope this prospectus will help you decide whether Sussex is right for you. If you have any queries, do not hesitate to contact us – or come to one of our open days or regular campus tours, and see for yourself what makes Sussex so special.

Syrie’s perspective‘I visited the University of Sussex twice before making my application. The first time was on a sunny summer open day – the grass was covered with people chatting and laughing. The second time was on a cold rainy winter day when everyone was racing from building to building in search of cover. ‘Both times I can remember being gripped by a feeling of excitement based on the thought that I could come here. I imagined myself going to the Library and sitting in the student bars. The idea of life on a campus with everything on one site really appealed to me. I did visit some other universities, but Sussex seemed to be the perfect place for me and it still is. ‘One of the best things about my job is talking to prospective students knowing that some people will love the campus and want to make Sussex “their place” too.’

Open days and other ways to visit SussexLife at Sussex

We have tried to make this prospectus as informative as possible, but it can never give you a complete feel of what

life is like at Sussex. To get the big picture, we would like to invite you to visit. Come and see for yourself what a beautiful campus we have and what a great time you could have here.

We will hold two open days in 2008, on Saturday 14 June and Saturday 11 October, as well as a year-round programme of campus tours and other visits.

Booking for all events is essential, and you can check available dates and request places for you and your family at www.sussex.ac.uk/visitors

Open daysAs well as enabling you to sample the atmosphere of the Sussex campus first hand, open days give you the very best opportunity to talk to our tutors about the subjects that interest you. We organise a packed programme of activities, including subject presentations, student life talks, and tours of departments and student accommodation. We even offer free bus tours of nearby Brighton, to give you a wider view of life here.

Campus toursIf you are unable to attend one of our open days, you are welcome to come on one of our regular campus tours. The tours, led by current students or recent graduates, give you the chance to explore our campus and get the lowdown on student life at Sussex. Our trained team of advisors will also be on hand to answer any questions you have about your qualifications, university life in general, or Sussex degrees in particular.

Mature student drop-insIf you have been out of formal education for some years, you may prefer to book a place on one of our regular mature student tours. These sessions – normally led by a mature student at Sussex – will give you the chance to tour campus and get in-depth advice on entry routes and student support at the University.

Self-guided visitsIf you can’t make any of our listed visit opportunities, you are still welcome to come and explore our friendly campus. On weekdays, you can collect a map and an information pack and get advice on how best to make use of your time on campus by asking for a member of our Student Recruitment Services at main reception, Sussex House.

Visiting the Brighton and Sussex Medical SchoolIf you are interested in studying Medicine, please visit the Brighton and Sussex Medical School website at www.bsms.ac.uk for information about their open days.

Group visitsWe also welcome hundreds of schools and colleges to campus each year, offering a range of activities tailored to the needs of the group. A typical visit might include a campus tour, a look at our learning resources and a talk in one of the lecture theatres. Teachers or careers advisors wishing to bring a group to campus are invited to contact Student Recruitment Services at the address below right. We look forward to seeing you.

Once you have appliedAlthough it is a good idea to visit universities before including them on your UCAS application, we know it is not always possible. So do be assured that if you apply to Sussex and are made an offer, we will normally invite you to an admissions day. These usually take place between November and April each year, and before any UCAS deadlines for replying to offers.

Admissions days give you the opportunity to meet current students and staff, discuss your chosen degree in more detail and decide finally whether Sussex is for you.
