About Vietnam
People first inhabited Vietnam 5,000 years ago. Since the Chinese invaded in 207 BC
Vietnamese history has been characterized by colonization.
Vietnam is 250 miles longer than California but only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point.
Vietnam has diverse ecosystems from lowland rain forests to towering mountain ranges.
While most people still live in the countryside, the cities are becoming increasing populous and developed.
Religious beliefs are centered on the “Three Teachings” of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.

About Hanoi Vietnam’s original capital. Colonial city center was
developed under the French and remains one of the best preserved city centers in Southeast Asia.
Became the capital again in 1975 at the end of the war with the U.S.
Famous for its lakes, museums, and old quarter.
Now a city of 3 million people

About Hue
Emperor Gia Long unified Vietnam in 1802 and made Hue his capital.
Some of the worst urban fighting during the war took place in Hue (see Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket.)
Hue today is a beautiful canal-lined city with famous archaeological sites nearby.

About Da Nang
During the war Danang housed a large US naval facility and a giant airbase.
Danang today is a thriving city—Vietnam’s 3rd largest—and has beautiful mountains and beaches nearby.

About Nha Trang Popular with tourists for its

About Hoi An Historical trading center on the

About Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon Sai Gon was the capital of the
French Colony of Cochin China During the war it was the capital
of South Vietnam and some of the fiercest fighting during the Tet Offensive
The city today has a metropolitan area of more than 7 million people.
Its French colonial buildings include the Opera House, the City Post Office and the Cathedral

About the Mekong Delta The Mekong Delta forms the
heart of Vietnam’s rice-growing agriculture.
The Mekong River is one of the most important in the world, with more than 60 million people in the lower basin alone.
There are many floating markets in the Delta where local people sell produce and other goods directly from their boats.
