SEMINARS ABROAD UC Davis Study Abroad is pleased to announce Seminars Abroad, new study abroad programs offered between quarters. These unique learning experiences are great opportunities for students who may not be able to participate in longer programs because of other commitments, or who are interested in longer programs but want to get a taste of the abroad experience first. UC Davis faculty lead small groups of students on programs of 10-21 days. In London students attend live performances of plays they have read; in Rome a faculty expert guides students through the stunning art and architecture of the Eternal City. Programs may be a stand-alone course or an onsite component for a course taught during the regular term. Coming in 2016: Antarctica—an unparalleled opportunity to study the region’s beautiful and threatened ecosystems onsite. Please visit our website for the latest updates and offerings.

FALL SEMINAR: “ROME—ART AND THE CITY”

Rome, Italy A world capital for over 2000 years, Rome has the greatest historical range of art and architec-ture of any major city. The class will meet entirely on-site (no classroom lectures or exams) with visits to ancient, medieval, Renaissance and later art and architecture in Rome, and with excursions outside the city proper. Sites will include the Roman Forums, the Vatican and its museums, and some of Rome’s artistically richest neighborhoods. The lec-ture/discussions will develop skills of close, critical looking at the design and function of artworks and buildings. A final paper will compare and contrast the goals and values expressed in one ancient artwork or building, and one medieval or later artwork or building, with the student’s own values and beliefs.

WINTER HOLIDAY SEMINAR: “LONDON THEATRE—LIVE!”

London, UK If you are interested in live theater, there’s no place like London. It’s home to the National Theatre with its three stages, to Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, The Old Vic, the Young Vic, and the many, many theaters of London’s famous West End. Class will begin as seminars held every other week on campus in the fall quarter. Then we’ll travel to London and attend six or more performances at different theaters, including the new Wanamaker Playhouse and the National Theatre. Our reading list will be determined by the holiday production schedule in London, which may include holiday pantomimes. Plays we’ll see include the National Theatre’s hit production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, based on the novel by Mark Haddon, War Horse with its giant puppets, The Knight and the Burning Pestle, Treasure Island, and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

HONORS ABROAD: “A TALE OF TWO CITIES”

London, UK and Paris, France“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” begins Charles Dickens’ famous novel featuring the two cities that are the focus of this course. The best and worst of times, indeed. Through centuries, England and France developed as nations while alternately battling and befriending one another. The study abroad seminar “A Tale of Two Cities” will focus on the history of enmity, rivalry, and cooperation between England and France and how this historical relationship is represented in the monuments and art in London and Paris.
