Technology Integration

My Definition … broken down

The use of technologies (tools with processors, silicon chips, programming built into them);

by teachers and/or students (and leaders!) that support;

participation in activities with others using materials that are contextually- and culturally-relevant across time and spaces;

that help development of knowledge of science, math, English, social studies, physical education ….

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

CONSIDER A FRAMEWORK …R.A .T.

Transformation

Page 11: Transformative Technology Integration in Classrooms

R. A. T.

Category Effect, Quality

R. Replacement No change or effect besides introduction of technology.

Substitute, proxy, stand-in.

A. Amplification Intensification effect – more, faster, better, clearer, stronger

T. Transformation Novel creation effect – unattainable experience, action;

alteration, change, restructure, reorganize

How does the technology impact: Instruction, Learning, and/or Curriculum

Teachers will develop technology-supported practices that rangeacross R, A, & T

IT REQUIRES EDUCATIONAL CHANGE.

Why is there a dearth of “T” Transformation?

Page 14: Transformative Technology Integration in Classrooms

“Real Educational Change” Is:

Change in materials/resourcesChange in behaviors / teaching practicesChange in beliefs!

We leave the hardest work for the teachers to do …alone with few/no resources

Technology

Pedagogy

Content

Professional Development often focuses here

Moving content into the mix can be used to challenge current beliefs

Strategies

Collaboratively develop an institutional ‘shared meaning’ of transformative technology integration

Establish reflective practice in learning communities

Focus on content-specific professional learning Start with content-specific problems-of-practice Search for technological solutions

Enable technology integration specialists with capacity, direction, resources, & power to make change
