What is it ?The TOK presentation
requires students to
identify and explore a
knowledge question
raised by a substantive
real-life situation that is
of interest to them.
Real Life SituationObserved Phenomena from the real world, it can be contemporary or historical.
E.g:• The economic growth of Thailand
20th-21st Century• The rise of the ‘Asian Economic
Tigers’• The role of democracy in ASEAN.• Changing notions of beauty,
Androgenisation of fashion,• Social media shaming,• Hipsters.• Moores Law• Growth of AI applications.• Plausibility of green power• Internet privacyEtc etc etc
Knowledge QuestionReal Life Situation Knowledge Question
Understanding the economic growth of Thailand in the early 21st Century.
How do we measure cause and effect within complex human behavioural systems ?
The changing notions of beauty. Is appreciation of aesthetics better understood as a cultural trend or a set of absolute imperatives ?
The consequences of Moore’s Law. To what extent do humans successfully predict technological outcomes ?
Plausibility of green energy production. Can we know whether innovation is better led by vision or need ?
Knowledge Questions
Focuses on Knowledge, not on the specific content.
Open Ended – there are a number of possible answers to the question
General rather than specific – it looks at wider knowledge production rather than a specific case.
