ภาพยนตร์สามมิติเป็นการนำาปรากฏการณ์การโพลาไรเซซนัของแสงมาประยุกต์ใช ้Polarization of light คือ คลื่นแสงท่ีเคลื่อนท่ีไปในทางทิศบนแนวระนาบใดระนาบหนึ่ง จึงเรียกว่าแสงโพราไรซ ์(polarized light)

Linear Polarization: คือการกรองในแนวต้ัง และแนวนอนCircular Polarization: กรองแสงแบบตามเข็มนาฬิกาและทวนเขม็นาฬิกา

Linear Polarization Layer + Quarter Wave Retarder = Circular Polarization

ตาของมนุษย์จะอยู่ห่างกนั 5 cm. ดังนั้นภาพที่ตาข้างซ้ายและตาข้างขวาเห็นนั้น จะเป็นภาพสองภาพที่แตกต่างกนั หลักการถ่ายภาพหรือสร้างหนังสามมิตินั้นเป็นการนำาหลักการนี้มาใช้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นกล้องไฮเทคขนาดไหนกต็าม

ภาพ 3 มิติ นั้นตั้งอยู่บนพื้นฐานของการทำางานร่วมกนัระหว่าง “ตา” และ “สมอง” เพื่อสรา้งภาพสามมิติโดยธรรมชาติในโลกที่คนทั่วๆ ไปมองเห็นด้วยตาสองตา และแม้ว่าตาทั้งสองข้างจะจับจ้องอยู่ที่จุดศูนย์กลางโดยอัตโนมัติ แต่ก็เป็นการมองจากสองมุมที่ต่างกันอยู่เล็กน้อย จึงทำาให้เกดิสองภาพที่ชัดเจน ซึ่งสมองจะใช้เพื่อสร้างภาพความลึกแบบสามมิติอย่างที่เรามองเห็น
