The US in the 1990s
The Persian Gulf War/Desert Storm
· Iraq led by Sadaam Hussein
invaded Kuwait
· War was mainly fought from the air
· US had fewer than 400 casualties,
Iraq had over 100,000 military and
civilian deaths
· US forced Iraq out of Kuwait
Americans with Disabilities Act
· Protected the disabled from discrimination
· Cannot refuse to hire someone due to their disabilities
NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)
· Passed by President Clinton
· Mexico, US and Canada have free trade
oNo tariffs
· Supporters said it would help everyone’s economy and
create new jobs
· Opponents said it would transfer jobs to Mexico
2000 Election (Bush Vs. Gore)
· Electoral vote was close
· It all came down to the state of Florida
· Bush won the state by 300 votes and Gore demanded a
recount by hand because of voting issues
· Even though Gore won the popular vote by 500,000
Bush won the electoral vote and became president
Rollback of Affirmative Action· Choosing minorities over whites for admission into college or employment
o Still a consideration today
o Attempt to make up for previous discrimination
· Bakke v. University of California challenged this practice
o “Reverse discrimination”
o Supreme Court agreed that any type of quota system is discriminatory
o Can still use race and gender as a factor in decision
