Need and Importance of Practical Work in Science

To provide permanent knowledge to the students and this knowledge acquired practical work will be retained by the students for a long period of time

To provide various utilities and application of scientific facts in our daily life

To develop scientific attitude and interest in science among student. It provide the students with opportunities to acquire a scientific

knowledge andto become an enthusiastic experimentalist and discoverer.

To develop the habit of tackling any problem by scientific method in systematic and organised way

Need and Importance of Practical Work in Science (contd.)Self dependence,co-operation,initiativeness and self

reliance are developed through practical work.To provide situation for students to make use of different

scientific instruments and thereby make them technical minded.

To develop curiosity in the minds of young children. To promote research and experimentation. It fosters love for mechanical work in the laboratory.

Planning of science laboratoryOne must follow the following important

factors while planning a laboratory. It must be spacious. It must be conducive for physical work.It must permit enough teacher supervision of

the pupils work.It must have water, gas and electric points

whereever they are needed.

Page 6: The science laboratory welcome (2)

Planning of science laboratory(contd)

It must have ample storage facilities for equipments.

It must have an emergency exit if it is not situated in the ground floor.

Materials available in LaboratoryObservation aids consist of apparatus and

materials designed for qualitative and quantitative observation related to mass , length and time

Eg: chemical balance ,meter scales, stopwatches

Control aids includes apparatuses which are associated with phenomena like temperature, pressure ,volume etc.

Eg: Barometer, Boyles law apparatus etcGlasswares include glass jars, funnels, bell

jars, pippettes round bottom flasks funnels, watch glasses, conical flasks etc

Page 9: The science laboratory welcome (2)

Materials available in LaboratoryAncillary aids are used like supporting

instruments likes stands, clamps ,beakers etcMaterials include chemicals reagents

specimens and other consumable material Teaching aids include the aids used for

effective teaching like charts ,models , films, projectors, slides etc

Tools are the equipment required for repairing and maintaining of the apparatus

Storage of Chemicals Precautions in storing chemicals

Chemicals substances to be kept in well stoppered bottles.Eg:bleachingpowder, iodine, bromine water, hydrogenperoxide etc

Chemical substances to be prepared as required

Eg:aquaregia,ammoniummolybdate,sodium nitroprusside etc

Chemical substances to be kept in mineral naphtha or petrol Eg:sodium, potassium, magnesium ribbon

Page 11: The science laboratory welcome (2)

Storage of Chemicals (contd.)

Chemical substances to be stored in water Eg:phophorous,Picric acid

Chemical substances to be kept in a dark cupboard in a cool placeEg:ferrous sulphate,Nessler’s reagent etc

Instruction CardsThe teacher can make postcard size instruction cards to all experiments in the laboratory.

The card is placed near the relevant experiment.

Each card should give details on aim, apparatus, procedure, tabular columns, any required diagrams and special precautions to be taken
