The choices you make in design will determine the success of your project or presentation.

Consider the following slide from

a presentation ...

and take notes fast because this slide will only be up for a minute or

two…

Elements and Principles of Design• Color- Color makes slides more interesting to the eye and can determine whether • the message is understood or not. Can the images or text be seen easily? Is it too • bright and hard to look at?• Movement- Movement helps the viewer interpret the slide efficiently and also

makes the experience more fun. • Unity- Things, like images and text, have to make sense together for the slide to be

understood more easily. Confusion then results in disinterest and a lack of learning.• Contrast- Major differences put together creates an aesthetically pleasing result. It

also makes things more visible because they stand out. • Space/size- Deciding what proportions should be and making good decisions about

what should be larger and stand out more help make slides pleasing to the eye and easy to understand.

• Balance- Are things supposed to be even or asymmetrical? Is one area completely adequate and the other lacking? The viewer will become disinterested if the slide has tension from an imbalance.

• Rhythm- Using repeating patterns and/or variation makes slides easy to read and follow.

The whole project, or presentation, fits

and makes sense because of a visual commonality or theme…

Page 25: The Art of PowerPoint

I used a common background to tie together all the slides. You can choose designs that match the theme, like fonts…
