Enhancing teacher education through OER

The TESS-India MOOC is an open and free six week online professional development course for teachereducators in the Indian context, offered in English. It is integral to the TESS-India strategy for change. Teachereducators effectively and sustainably learn to use the TESS-India Teacher Development OER to close the policy-practice gap in classroom teaching and learning. The first iteration of the MOOC took place between 27 May –7 July 2015.

Who took part in the TESS-India MOOC?

Course participants were distributed all over the world, with over a quarter (27%) based in India. More than two thirds reported theiroccupation as either teacher educator or teacher (37% for each), and the majority (66%) had not taken part in a MOOC before. Over half(56%) of the MOOC participants were female.

Alongside general registration, 220 participants from the seven TESS-India states werenominated to take part in the MOOC – these participants were given additional supportthroughout the course, including being invited to attend face-to-face Contact Classes led bytrained facilitators.

What were participant experiences of the MOOC?

11% of registered participants completed the MOOC andreceived a certificate – this compares favourably to averagecompletion for other MOOCs.

Almost all of the MOOC participants who responded to the endof course survey reported that the MOOC was easy to use andhelped them in multiple areas of their professionaldevelopment.

Who were the nominated participants? What was their experience of the MOOC?

The majority of nominated participants were teacher educators (58%) with much experience of teaching and teacher training - most arecurrently employed within DIETs. Most (96%) had not participated in a MOOC before, and almost all who completed the end of course surveyreported greater levels of confidence in their IT skills (93%) and in participating in online learning (95%) after completing the course. Most ofthe nominated participants used and adapted the TESS-India OER whilst participating in the MOOC, and reported in the end of course surveythat they plan to continue to use them in their professional practice after completing the course – a key objective of the MOOC.

Participants accessed the MOOC: Contact Classes took place in each of the seven TESS-India states - 95% of nominated participants who completed the

end of course survey reported that they attended at least one Contact Class.

Lessons Learned

Following this pilot iteration, the project will internally review the MOOC prior toa second launch of the course. Key to this review will be dealing with any issueswhich participants in India had connecting to the MOOC, and calculating thecost-effectiveness and Value for Money offered by this course.
