Back-up your files REGULARLY

A. Open your My Documents folder, resize that window.B. Open “My Computer” and resize that window. C. You should be able to see both windows side-by-side. D. Select (highlight) your school folder (whatever folder has all

your SCHOOL work).E. While highlighted, drag that folder over the top of your P:

drive and release.F. You will probably see a pop-up that “says” to replace or

replace all….click on “replace all” for all your files to be copied. This will insure that the new versions of everything will be backed-up.

G. Backing up your files will allow any repairs to be completed on your unit without the loss of files or other information.

Page 10: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Back-up your files REGULARLY

ADDITIONAL ways of backing-up your files are to: 1. Buy an external hard drive and periodically move your files to this other hard drive. 2. Use your USB flashdrive. A 4GB-8GB USB flashdrive is plenty of space. 3. Make a CD of your files.

Page 11: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Please come to the tech office whenever you experience an issue, immediately. Please don’t assume that the computer “should” be acting in a particular way. Ask questions, use your e-mail or drop by the Tech office to communicate with us about any issues. Use preventative maintenance in owning your TPC.

Page 12: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Preventative Maintenance Tips“PMT”

• Organize your classes, assignments by folders

• Pay attention to your saving pathway• Back-up to your P: drive daily• Carry your TPC in the assigned case• Keep from carrying books on top of

case

Page 13: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

How can you become a smart, responsible consumer of the

technology that is in your hands and in your future?

What is YOUR responsibility?

Page 14: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

“PMT”• Avoid dropping TPC• Place TPC on standby between classes

– Use “Q” menu shortcut– Fn -> f3– Flick the on/off button

• Turn TPC off before leaving campus after you back-up to your P: drive

• READ the fine print when installing and downloading

Page 15: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

When shutting down your computer or placing the TPC into standby or hibernate, insure that the screen is totally black BEFORE closing the “lid.” This will prevent eventual, long-term damage to the hard drive of your computer.

Fn-f3 “flick” the on/off Q Menu

Page 16: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Shut down your computer from school to home and home to school. Avoid placing your computer in stand-by or hibernate when leaving campus or home. You will find that turning off your computer (rebooting) does indeed provide a bit of a breather for your TPC. A smart consumer never leaves any piece of equipment on 24 hours/7days per week.

Page 17: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

“PMT”Let’s do this…

• Reduce the number of icons on desktop

• Empty recycle bin regularly• Defragment files• Delete Internet “cookies” and “files”• Charging and Refreshing battery(ies)

Page 18: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Keep your TPC in the proper portfolio case. This is very important for “safety” reasons. Our school has hard terrazzo floors and thus the case is designed to protect the TPC from stress when dropped. Understand that no computer, regardless of any claims for durability, can avoid all damages when dropped. When it happens to you….get it repaired!

Page 19: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

While the case is intended to help in keeping the damage to a minimum, YOU must help in this by reducing stress. When you stack your computer under your books, walk up to your locker and drop the stack from on high; this act places undue stress on the computer. Try to avoid this drop as much as possible, by slowly lowering the stack to the floor. Better yet, refrain from carrying your books on top of the computer.

Page 20: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Please keep your TPC and all its parts (power cord stays home.) as secure as possible…locked in your locker or in an office (with permission)

Loaning your TPC parts to friends is admirable. Please consider this act of friendship and stay in tune with this lending practice. If something happens to any piece while in your friend’s possession, could this potentially jeopardize the friendship?

Consider the costs….

Page 21: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Your stylus should be tethered to your computer. When you close your computer lid make sure that the tether is outside the lid and not laying on your keys. This will avoid the tether catching on the keys so that when you open the lid the tether will not catch a key and pull it off the keyboard.

Page 22: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Avoid sending movie or picture files through your vdoh e-mail account. Use the villalabuser drive found at “My Computer.” This drive is a shared space where you can create a folder for pictures or movies, e-mail your classmates, give them the location and name of the file folder, allow them to copy the files, and then GO BACK IN AND DELETE THE FOLDER. Once in a while the tech office “cleans up” the villalabuser drive and removes such extras, but it is always very nice (and responsible) if you clean up after yourself.

Page 23: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Your E-mail

As you all use your vdoh e-mail (or other e-mail accounts), you receive lots of spam or scam e-mail. Take control of this situation as much as you can and help teach others the importance of understanding and safeguarding against this cultural “invasion.”

Page 24: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Your E-mail

a. Avoid forwarding e-mail WITHOUT the proper investigation and questioning about its validity or importance; and the proper setup. (AUP)b. Avoid clicking “here” and on this “link” for information that really is too good to be true. This clicking just gives information to the wrong people and allows the receiver access to either your computer or other pieces of information as well as invasions of viruses. (right click)

Page 25: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Your E-mail

c. BE SMART – check out a supposed message by visiting http://www.snopes.com or another urban myth site. These sites will “tell” you whether a story is true or not.d. You can always check with the tech department to verify most anything. It is our job to stay on top of such issues as much as possible.e. Share with others what you know and find out. Our (yours and ours) responsibility is to act responsibly toward others with protective information.

Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006The U.S. House of Representatives

recently decided to play to peoples' fears and passed by a vote of 410 to 15 a bill banning social networking sites from our schools. The Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006, or DOPA, requires that all schools outlaw the use of social networking web sites and chat rooms in order to receive federal funds for technology.

Page 27: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Child Internet Protection ActThe Children’s Internet Protection Act

(CIPA) is a federal law enacted by Congress in December 2000 to address concerns about access to offensive content over the Internet on school and library computers. CIPA imposes certain types of requirements on any school or library that receives funding support for Internet access or internal connections from the “E-rate” program – a program that makes certain technology more affordable for eligible schools and libraries.

Facebook, MySpace or Other SNFalse Login Pages

READ the URL and the cursor pop-up. If it isn’t spelled correctly or says another website or login area, it is a FALSE page. If you type in your login name and password into this false page, the site has just stolen your personal information. Look at all pages before logging in to insure you are not at a false page. “Pay” attention!!!!

Page 30: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Understand that ANYONE can “steal” your pictures and create a false profile. Then, they can write anything they want using your pictures.

Know the “dangers” of clicking on photos, links, etc.

You are a Child of the Sacred Heart. Does your profile page or IM provide evidence to prove this?

Know the expectations of the School (Athletics) with regard to Social Networking.

Who REALLY has access to your SN page? Delete or Keep??

Facebook, MySpace or Other SN

Safe “Blogging” Tips for Teens• Be as anonymous as possible. Avoid postings

that could enable a stranger to locate you. That includes your last name, the name of your school, sports teams, the town you live in, and where you hang out.

• Protect your info. Check to see if your service has a "friends" list that allows you to control who can visit your profile or blog. If so, allow only people you know and trust. If you don't use privacy features, anyone can see your info, including people with bad intentions.

Page 32: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Safe “Blogging” Tips for Teens• Avoid in-person meetings. Don't get together with

someone you "meet" in a profile or blog unless you are certain of their actual identity. Let your parents know about meeting requests!!!!!

• Photos: Think before posting. What's uploaded to the Net can be downloaded by anyone and passed around or posted online pretty much forever. Avoid posting photos that allow people to identify you (for example, when they're searching for your high school), especially sexually suggestive images. Before uploading a photo, think about how you'd feel if it were seen by a parent/grandparent, college admissions counselor, or future employer.

• Nothing is secure or private!!!

Page 33: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Safe “Blogging” Tips for Teens• Check comments (your wall) regularly. Don't

respond to mean or embarrassing comments. Delete them and, if possible, block offensive people from commenting further. If this is a “real” friend explain why they are blocked.

• Be honest about your age. Membership rules are there to protect people. If you are too young to sign up, do not attempt to lie about your age. Talk with your parents about alternative sites that may be appropriate for you.

Pay attention to what you are downloading and installing.

For example…CursorMania comes with mywebsearch - an Internet Explorer plugin that allows you to choose from thousands of custom cursors to use on your computer - part of the Fun Web Products suite of utilities such as Smiley Central, My Mail Stationary, My Mail Signature, PopSwatter, Popular Screensavers, and the My Way website portal -- piece of spyware that keeps track of what you are doing on the Internet

Page 56: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Pay attention to what you are downloading and installing.

All of these products are known to use cookies to track keystroke and Internet usage, although they “claim” not to use cookies or anything else to track personally identifiable information.

That being said, I would still recommend uninstalling the Cursor Mania software and other Fun Web Products.

PLEASE read (carefully) EVERY element included in ANY installation you choose to complete.

Page 57: Technology Tips for Students-New Student Tech Camp

Pay attention to what you are downloading and installing.

Remember that if you complete these installs and your computer runs slower than it really should, YOU have created this problem. The Tech Department is here to help and we will probably uninstall such programs.
