Collaboration with Faculty
LSU Libraries uses a “liaison” model to communicate and collaborate with faculty members
Often, we send email updates to faculty members and visit classes for brief instruction sessions on library resources
However, for many of us, the collaboration shouldn’t, and doesn’t, stop at that level
Customized Research & Instruction Support
When LSU librarians visit individual classes for customized instruction sessions or assist researchers with specific questions, the relationship can continue in a variety of ways: Subject guides Moodle tools Wikis Blogs Podcasts/screencasts
Subject Guides
LSU Libraries has subject guides devoted to discipline-specific resources and help http://www.lib.lsu.edu/weblio.html
While these guides are in various stages of being updated, many offer direct connection to the subject librarian and the resources that she/he recommends
These guides can be linked into Moodle pages, or put on a course syllabus
Moodle Tools & Community Courses When a librarian visits the class, she/he often
creates a presentation or helpsheet that can be posted in Moodle
Likewise, he/she can create quiz files, related to the lesson, that will import directly into a Moodle course
If he/she is added to the course, he/she can create a librarian “discussion forum” that continues the library discussion
Additionally, the librarian can keep posting helpful hints and/or resources for specific assignments, since he/she has already been working with that particular class
Wikis
Wikis are websites that are quickly and easily created and maintained
Because of this ease of creation, collaboration, and maintenance, wikis are particularly well suited for creating course-specific help material
Currently, several librarians use PBWorks, which is one of many free wiki software availablehttp://huec1021.pbworks.com/
Blogs
Many librarians host blogs for their particular subject areas
These blogs highlight resources, update their departments on library happenings, and offer research help
Example: Business http://lsulibrariesbus.blogspot.com/
Podcasting/Screencasting
LSU Libraries has recently started creating digital tutorials using Adobe Captivate to aid students, faculty, and researchers in using library resources.
The Business subject guide currently hosts a podcast on finding articles in the Wall Street Journal: http://www.lib.lsu.edu/instruction/tutorials/business/wsj/index
The Libraries are also working on screencasts for general databases:
