Paper questionnaire Online survey

Finding out the gender of the audience is the main element for while constructing the

magazine and what I should base it on. Most rock magazines such as NME, Q, Classic Rock

and MOJO there target audience are mostly male readers. From the results below, I can

see that for the online survey there is an equal amount of female and male respondents,

which certainly doesn’t match with the paper questionnaire as there are only 6/20 which

is 30% of them are female and the rest are male. This is maybe due to the fact that I

gave out the paper questionnaires mainly to men, so I didn’t get much from the female

readers that would be interested a particular genre of magazines. Moreover, I will be

aiming my magazine on both male and female readers as I got back from both, so I will

need to think about what type of image I should use on the front cover which appeals to

both female and male readers, however it will be mainly men.

Q: AgeAge is an important aspect to consider while creating a magazine, different age groups will

have different use of language and images inside the magazine. From my results 18/28 (about

64%) of the responses are aged 17 or under and 8/28 (about 30%) are age 18-24 years old;

these are the two common responses for this question. However, for the paper questionnaire I

handed out the paper questionnaires to a variety of different age groups which helped me

perceive different types of responses. From the results, I can observe that 50% of my

respondents aged 18 to 24 which gives me a rough idea about what my target readers should be.

I will be mainly aiming my music magazine at 17-24 years as now I will know what type of

language I should use, colours, and images. NME and Q magazines are aimed at the younger

audience, so I will be using my to

How often do you buy magazines?

never

This question would help me with whether I should make my magazine a monthly or weekly

magazine and what audience would more likely buy magazines. From my online questionnaire

results, I can see that most of the respondents (60%) never buy magazines and then the second

common answer was that they buy magazines monthly and rarely. Whereas, from the paper

magazine responses I can perceive that 50% buy monthly magazines. So, from these two pieces

of data I will be aiming to create a monthly magazine. All the magazines are monthly

magazines which include a lot of information inside each issue.

What is your favourite genre?

Other - R&B

This question is the most important question, due to the fact as it will be the key on what

genre I should base my music magazine on. From the online responses, I can see that the most

common choices were rock (42%) and pop (21%), also some people specified different genres

such as rap and R&B in the other box. I received similar responses from my paper

questionnaire and again rock (45%) was the most common choice out of all the other choices.

Consequently, I will be aiming to construct a rock magazine as my audience mostly prefer

rock. I will now need to focus on what type images, language and colours to use in my

magazine. As each genre has different types of features and elements to be included.

Moreover, my research was mainly focused on rock magazines, so I have a lot of knowledge on

how the magazines are and what type of language they use.

For this question, I got similar results on how much the audience are willing to

pay for a music magazine. As my audience are mainly aged 17-24 years old, most of

them are unemployed as they would be still in education, so they wouldn’t want to

spend a lot of money on magazines. So the most common choice on both paper and

online questionnaire are £2.00-£2.99, as it would be an affordable price for nearly

all the readers a month.

This would help me with what I should include on my contents page and

on my double page spread as I would like to know what the audience most

prefer. From both results the paper and online survey I can see that

the most common choices are free gifts and interview with artist. 60%

of the readers on the online survey are would like interviews with

artists, however there is a big difference between the paper

questionnaire as only 13% would like interviews, but it is still one of

the most common choices after the free gifts. Consequently, this shows

that I should include a free CD and for my double page spread I would

have an interview with an artist. I now also know what type of content

I should include on my contents page and which will be in the features

column and the regular column, the most common choices would be in the

features column and the other content would under regulars.

This question relates to how to make my front cover successful and

attract my readers attention. It is essential as I need to know what

elements they would like to see on the front cover. My online

questionnaire most common choices are famous artist or bands (75%),

images (70%) and free gifts (55%); this suggests that they mostly

like the content of the magazine. I got similar results for my paper

questionnaire results; however the most common choice was the layout

which suggest that it is essential how things are laid out on the

page so it will attract the audiences attention.

Q8: On a scale from 0 to 10, would you buy

a magazine that has unknown artists? This is an essential question as I will be focusing my magazine on an unknown artists.

Consequently, from the online survey results I can see that the average is 6 which suggest

that they don’t mind buying a magazine that has an unknown artist. However, as my paper

questionnaire was for the older audience, they wouldn’t like to buy aa magazine that has an

unknown artist as 13/20 picked 2 which shows that most of them would not like to buy a

magazine that has an unknown artist. This is due to the fact the older readers are more

into the traditional artists and bands.

Most music magazine include free gifts/ samples such as free CD and posters, which

the readers would like to have from there favourite artists. Both the paper and

online questionnaire show that 85% of the audience would like to find gifts and

samples in magazines. So, I am more likely to include a free CD or a poster inside my

magazine as it is something most audiences would look for in music magazines.

Q10: Does the way the artists dressed

in the magazine have an effect on your

fashion sense?Lastly, I asked this question to see if the way the artists are dressed in the magazine has

an effect on them, as each genre of music has a different style and fashion sense. For

example, rock music magazine mostly wear black leather clothes. I will need to focus on the

way artists are dressed while planning out my images for my music magazine. From the

results I can see that the responds are mostly ‘no’ 80%-90% which suggest that I shouldn’t

focus much on the way my artist will be dressed as it wont effect my readers.
