Amelia Patchett Report for Results from Music Magazine Survey In the following Survey, I have asked 10 questions related to Music which will help me understand what is the best genre and type of audience I should aim my magazine to. I asked eight people to complete my survey as it is an even number and enough to have reliable results. I asked their age as the first question so I know what type of audience I would mainly have towards my magazine; this helps me target my front cover to the most popular age. However, my results have appeared as equal with three people as 12 to 18 and 19 to 25 with also two people at the age of 45 to 54. This suggests that my main audience for my magazine should be aimed at 12 to 25 year olds probably mentioning some bands for the older ages to make sure my audience is widely spread so that the magazine can be bought from a couple of different ages rather than sticking to a strict age. Their gender was asked because it could give an insight as to the theme of the front cover. This is because girls and boys have different tastes as to what they would go for by looking at the cover of a magazine. For example , to stereotype, girls would be more interested in bright colours that will attract their attention whereas boys would probably prefer the usual dark colours such as blues, greys and reds. My results were that there are 62.50% of girls and only 37.50% of boys. This gives more ideas towards having a bright and busy sort of front cover to attract the best audience and make more people buy the magazine.

In the following Survey, I have asked 10 questions related to Music which will help me understand what is the best genre and type of audience I should aim my magazine to. I asked eight people to complete my survey as it is an even number and enough to have reliable results.

I asked their age as the first question so I know what type of audience I would mainly have towards my magazine; this helps me target my front cover to the most popular age. My results were that there are 62.50% of girls and only 37.50% of boys. I asked if they were employed to get an average of what price they would pay for the magazine as it would vary between having a job and a good income and being unemployed as people wouldn’t want to waste a lot of money in buying a magazine. From my results, 62.5% do have a job and 37.5% don’t. Therefore I can interpret that I can have a price above the lowest amount as more people have jobs and would spend a little more.

I asked what their occupation was to the previous question so that I know what social status they’re in which will give me a more precise guess at choosing a price for my music magazine. For example, two people from my results are a waiter/waitress which will determine them as a social grade D which is working class. Sales assistant would also come under this category as well. However, a Hotpoint delivery man and teacher would be C2 as skilled working class as they have been trained fully for the job. These results show an average income between them which would highlight the idea of pricing my magazine at a price of £1-£2.

The results for this question will help me establish whether many people would read the magazine and therefore buy it. My results show a 50/50 situation which shows me a ratio of how many people would buy the magazine, ruling out whether they would buy it because they female, male or part of that age group.

To follow the previous question, I asked why if they said they didn’t read and music magazines and let them fill in their own personal answer. These results will tell me if there is a problem with the type of magazine and help me try and change my magazine so that more people will be able to buy it. However, my results showed that two aren’t very interested in reading music magazines and the other two responses prefer reading the newspaper and books which informs me that they aren’t really bothered about the music side to the magazine and like more information about the world and novels. Therefore I can’t do much on the fact that they don’t like reading about music and prefer more interesting and relevant information from newspapers as it won’t fit in with my music magazine.

As interpreted from the last question, my results from the question ‘what genres of music do you prefer?’ would be that pop and indie are the most popular. Therefore telling me that they should be the main genres in my music magazine as it would interest many people, making it more popular to buy. Pop has 87.5% whereas Indie is 75% also Rock and R+B are both on 50% which would help the idea of including a little bit of that type of genre as well allowing more people to be interested in it and actually buy the magazine.

The reason I asked this question is because I want to find out if people have read music magazines before and what type of genre they would go for therefore helping me choose the best genre to pick from my magazine so that I can get as many readers as possible. My results from this question are that Q, NME and Vibe are the most popular by 87.5%. This can establish that the genre people most like is more indie and pop rather than rock from Kerrang. It also gives an insight as to if they pick these brands of magazines because of the bold front cover or the contents by looking at the differences in each of them.

In conclusion, this survey has helped me make a better decision on what type of genre, price and artists I should pick for my music magazine. From these results I have chosen to make my magazine £1.50 as it is in between the most popular price range of £1-£2 and is affordable for unemployed people and is an easy price for people with occupations. As well as that, my genre would be based on Indie and Pop as they were the most mentioned in the type of artists and genres people prefer, therefore making my magazine more interesting and eye-catching for others. People would also be interested in the front covers which is what people first look at and judge. Therefore, I will base my front covers on artists in the Pop and Indie genre whist including other types of bands and artists of different genres to attract a lot of other people to the magazine increasing the amount of how many is sold.

Finally, I chose to ask their favourite artist or band as an open question to portray their different answers which will help me decide on good artists to put on the front cover or in the magazine to attract more people to buy it as they would firstly judge the magazine by the cover label. Most people chose artists such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Aurora which suggest more Pop genre type of artists which highlights that I should use Pop in the front cover as many other people would also like these artists. As well as that Wombats, The Smiths and Florence and the Machine are more indie persuading my idea of also putting some artists in this genre on the front cover as well to make my magazine popular to all types of genre, increasing the number of magazines sold and read.

By asking how much they were willing to pay, this gave me a more accurate assumption as to how much everyone wanted to pay even though they all have different or no occupations. By a high percentage people would pay up to £1-£2 for a music magazine. £1-£2 was picked 50% more than £2-£3 and 0-99p which makes my decision more easier as I would go for the most popular result as it is what everyone wants and will eventually sell more as it is a reasonable price for people who have jobs and affordable for those who are unemployed makes my decision.
