St.  Gabriel’s  iPad  Basics

I.  What  you  need  to  Start  To  use  your  St.  Gabriel’s  iPad,  you  will  need:

• Your  St.  Gabriel’s  issued  Apple  ID  for  installing  and  updating  Apps  shared  with  you  by  St.  Gabriel’s  and  for  Syncing  your  iPad  to  your  home  computer.

• An  internet  connection  (broadband  is  recommended).  At  St.  Gabriel’s  our  wireless  network  will  provide  your  internet  connection.  You  will  also  need  a  wireless  network  at  home  to  access  the  internet  on  your  iPad  from  there.

II.  Setting  up  the  iPad  The  St.  Gabriel’s  Tech  Staff  has  already  completed  the  setup  process,  including  connecting  to  the  school’s  Wi-‐Fi  network,  creating  your  Apple  ID,  and  turning  on  the  recommended  features.  You  can  view  the  options  we  have  already  set  by  opening  “Settings.”

III.  Using  the  iPad  at  School  Students  will  receive  instruction  at  school  on  the  basics  of  iPad  use  and  on  using  each  of  the  Apps  students  will  be  using  for  educational  purposes.  The  official  iPad  User  Guide  also  contains  information  about  the  Basics  of  iPad  use.  The  User  Guide  can  be  found  at  http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/ipad_user_guide.pdf  .

IV.  Adding  Personal  Content  Your  St.  Gabriel’s  provided  Apple  ID  will  not  allow  you  to  download  Apps  or  Media  (content)  that  cost  money.  You  MUST  NOT  change  the  password  for  that  Apple  ID  or  add  a  credit  card  to  that  account.  In  order  to  purchase  Apps  or  Media  you  would  need  to  use  a  parent  or  guardian’s  existing  Apple  ID  (with  the  permission  and  help  of  your  parents/guardians,  of  course).  After  that,  you  need  to  pay  attention  to  which  Apple  ID  you  are  signed  into  when  using  iTunes  Store  or  the  App  Store.

You  can  backup  information  and  files  from  the  iPad  using  iCloud.  iCloud  stores  your  photos,  apps,  contacts,  calendars,  and  more,  and  wirelessly  pushes  them  to  your  devices.  For  information  on  Using  iCloud  see  the  iPad  user  Guide  at  http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/ipad_user_guide.pdf    ,  or  ask  the  Technology  Champion.

V.  Using  St.  Gabriel’s  Apps  St.  Gabriel’s  will  use  different  methods  for  distributing  Apps  to  the  iPads.  Some  will  be  accessed  by  clicking  on  a  link  on  web  page,  others  by  clicking  on  a  link  in  an  email,  and  still  others  may  be  accessed  using  other  methods  depending  on  the  nature  of  that  App  or  the  lesson  in  which  it  is  being  used.

The  iPads  initially  contain  only  the  basic  iPad  Apps.  Students  will  receive  instruction  at  school  on  downloading  the  full  initial  set  of  St.  Gabriel’s  apps.

SGCS  iPad  FAQ  Who  will  be  receiving  iPads?  Every  student  in  the  fourth  and  fifth  grade  will  be  receiving  an  iPad  through  a  generous  grant.  That  grant  has  also  funded  iPads  in  each  classroom  Pre-‐K  through  3.

What  will  be  included  with  the  iPad?  In  addition  to  the  iPad  itself,  each  student  will  receive  a  charger  and  a  case.

Can  students  take  the  iPads  home?  The  iPads  are  the  property  of  St.  Gabriel’s  Catholic  School,  but  once  Grade  4  and  5  students  and  one  of  their  parents  have  signed  the  Acceptable  Use  Agreement,  they  will  be  able  to  take  them  home.  They  will  be  expected  to  bring  them  back  each  day  fully  charged  and  ready  for  use  in  class.

In  an  effort  to  ease  into  the  school  year,  Grade  4  students  will  leave  their  iPads  at  school  for  the  first  9-‐weeks  of  school.  After  which  point,  they  will  bring  them  back  and  forth  from  home  each  day.

What  should  we  do  if  there  is  a  problem  with  the  iPads?  Students  or  parents  should  make  the  classroom  teacher  aware  of  any  problem  with  the  iPad  immediately.  The  teacher  will  contact  St.  Gabriel’s  Technology  staff    who  will  facilitate  all  support  and  repair  of  the  iPads.  The  iPads  are  covered  by  a  manufacturer’s  warranty  as  well  as  an  additional  insurance  policy.  Those  policies  cover  nearly  all  potential  problems  except  negligence,  abuse  or  loss.

Can  students  personalize  their  iPad?  The  students  should  not  do  anything  to  the  iPad  or  its  case  that  would  permanently  alter  it  in  any  way.  However  students  can  install  their  own  apps  and  media  using  a  parent’s  Apple  ID.  Students  and  parents  should  back  up  any  personal  data  at  home.

Where  can  I  find  training  on  how  to  use  the  iPad?  Students  will  receive  instruction  on  using  the  iPad  from  St.  Gabriel’s  staff.  Apple  also  has  a  series  of  Guided  Tour  videos  on  using  the  iPad  and  many  of  its  included  apps.  These  are  available  at  http://www.apple.com/ipad/videos/  .  As  we  move  forward,  there  will  also  be  additional  opportunities  for  students  and  parents  to  learning  about  the  iPad  provided  by  SGCS  faculty  and  staff.

How  will  the  iPads  be  used  for  in  the  classroom?  SGCS  faculty  and  staff  work  directly  with  the  Director  of  Technology  and  Technology  Champion  to  define  the  best  use  for  iPads  in  the  classroom.    We  are  focusing  on  apps  that  provide  innovative  engagement,  self-‐paced  learning,  leadership,  collaboration,  and  worldwide  learning.  We  believe  that  the  unique  nature  of  the  iPad  provides  us  a  opportunity  to  enhance  these  areas  of  student  learning  in  particular,  and  to  increase  student  learning  overall,  by  allowing  our  teachers  to  provide  innovative  instruction  that  will  ensure  our  digital-‐age  students  are  empowered  to  learn,  live,  and  work  successfully  today  and  tomorrow.
