Summer isuponus,hardto believe how fast theseasons change. Oneof our many goals thisyear was to improvecommunicationwithallourmembers,getmorepeopleinvolved, and have moreevents. To this end weneedeveryone’shelpand

input.Tostartwedonothaveallourmember’semailaddressesandmanyhavechangedfromthe time theyfilledout theirapplication. Ihavebeen sending out emails almostweekly lettingour members know about what’s happening. Ineedyourhelpkeepingourdatabaseuptodate.IfyouhavenotbeengettingemailsfrommeonSGVR’s events, please email me you’re yourlatestcontactinformation.

Many have suggested we have the monthlybreakfastmeetingoccasionallyinthePasadenaarea.IwasthinkingwecouldalternatebetweenHoney’s in Glendora and another location.JohnBarroneand I recentlyvisitedGoody’s inElMonte (Valley Blvd. just west of PeckRd.),they have an excellent breakfast menu, andreasonablypriced.Best,wecanhavethebackroomtoourselves,enterdirectlyfromtheparkinglot into theroom,andparkourcars right there(theyarejustafewfeetawayandtheroomhascontinuous windows on two sides), where wewouldhaveaccesstothecarsduringbreakfast.AlargescreenTVwithDVDplayerisavailablein the room. If anyone has a great breakfastmeetingplaceinthegreaterPasadenaarealetusknow.

Iwould like to seeaProgressiveDinnerDrivelatethissummer.Asinlastsummerwewouldbehappytohaveeveryonetoourhouseforthemaincoarse, butwouldn’t it be great fun to drive toother’shomesonthewayforspecialappetizersandsaladsorsoaps.PossibleinlateJuly.

As always in August Sue and I head up toMonterey for the Historic Car Races and theotherfestivitiestakingplacetheweekofthe9th.Tomotorsports enthusiasts this is theweek tobeinMonterey.Therearethousandsofcarstosee, auctions to attend, displays, art galleries,younameit,allhavingtodowithautomobiles.This year itwould be great to have a caravanofSanGabrielValleymembers,maketheirwayup to Monterey. The drive up doesn’t get anybetter, and there are great places to stop onthewaytodine.Keepthatweekopen,ifwegetenough people interested in going up we canalso organize some special events and driveswhilethere.

SGVR Heritage SquareConcours d’ ElegancebyAlfredAbkan

OnSunday,April18,SGVRheld itsfirstConcours inseveral years. Itwas held atBicentennialSquare inPasadena. Ty Anderson arranged for a gorgeousspringdaytoholdtheevent.

Aspecialthankyoutothetwoeventsponsors,RusnakAuto Group, and Sierra Madre Collection, whosegenerouscontributionsunderwrotethemajorexpensesofputtingonthisevent.

A special treat was the arrival of the Early 911 club,who showed up enmasse and spent a brief time attheevent. Now, ifwe justcouldhavegotten themtoregisterfortheevent.Maybenextyear…

Some 21 different models of Porscheswentthroughthejudgingprocedure.Moredifferentmodelswerealsoondisplay.

Ofthejudgedcars,JimFitzgeraldofLosAngelesRegionwonClassC-1intheFullConcoursDivisionwithhis1964356.TimBoardwonClassC-2withhis1960356.Brett Mohr of Grand Prix Region wonClass C-3 with his 1966 912. He alsowontheDivision.SteveKreinfromSantaBarbaraRegionwonClassC-10withhisimmaculate1984944.

In the Street Division, Joe and KarenNedza of Orange Coast Region wonClassS-1withtheir1963356. InClassS-2, Paul Colony narrowly beat SteveHoskins, both from San Gabriel ValleyRegion, by .3 point. InClassS-3,TomandBevGouldofSanDiegoRegionwitha1970911beatSanGabrielValley’sJimAlton’s1965911.TomandBevalsowonthe Division. Dennis Fletcher of OCRwon Class S-6 with his 2003 911. InClassS-7,RobertWattofGoldenEmpireRegionwithhis 2003911narrowlybeatMarvin Snodgrass of California InlandRegion’s 2007 911 by .1 point. FrankCusenzaofOCRwon thefinalaward intheStreetDivisionwithhis2003BoxsterinClassS-8.

Clevenger ofGPXRegionwith their 1963356. They also won the division. ClassW&S-2 was won by Roger & Darya LoyofromOCRwiththeir1969912.LouiseBent,also from OCR won ClassW&S-3 with a1998 911. MikeDaviswonClassW&S-4witha2007911.CathyRobsonfromSanGabriel Valley Region won Class W&S-5withher1999Boxster.Finally,AlfredAbken,also fromSGVwonClassW&S-6withhis1982931.Luckily,therewerenoothercarsintheClass.

The last Division was Unrestored. LindaCobarrubias andDocPryor ofGrandPrixRegionwonClassUR-6withtheir1997911.TheyalsowontheDivision.LarryO-Roukeof LosAngeles Region won Class UR-10withhis1989944.

ItwasagorgeousdayinPasadena.Again,thanks to the sponsors that made thispossible,andtoeveryonewhoshoweduptomakethissuchasuccessfulevent.

SGVR GPX AutoCrossbyAlfredAbkan

Thereisa14thCenturyproverbthatstatesthat great oaks from little acorns grow. Well,RobertFriedman,SGVRVP,hadalittleacornofanidealatelastyearabouthostinganautocrossevent. As hosting such an event is probablybeyondtheabilitiesoforrelativelysmallRegion,the decision was made to request partneringwith anotherSoCalRegion, andGPXRegionwascontacted.

TheLACountyFairplexwasultimatelyselectedasthesitefortheautocrosstotakeplace.Weendedupusingpartsoftheracetrackthatwasusedinthe1950’sasasportscarracingvenue.TheareanowisusedbytheLACountySheriffsasatrainingfacility.

SkipCarter,SuesanWay,MartyGoldsmith,andNickPerdikarisfromGrandPrixRegionareonlyafewoftheGrandPrixRegionpeopleIcannamewhohelpedmakethiseventpossible.MyapologiestoeveryoneelsefromtheirRegionthathelpedthat Ihavenotnamed. Theyobviouslyhaveexperienceputtingononeoftheseevents,and the set up of the course went smoothlySaturday afternoon. Bright and early Sundaymorning, June 27, the great oak of an eventbegan.

Corporate sponsorship was provided by911Design,PacificPorsche, and LAPorscheDismantlers. Whenyouhaveoccasiontodealwithanyoftheseestablishments,besuretothankthem for supporting our clubs, and sponsoringthisevent.

Anespeciallynicetouchatthiseventwasthepaidcornerworkers.BobbieGiffin,andhercrewfromtheLancasterareacamedowntoreplacetheoddconethatwasknockedoutofitslocation,andgenerallykeepingthedriverssafe,whileonthecourse.Abigthankyoutothem.

Thecoursethatwassetupwasapproximately1.7mileslong.Therewere19turns,notcountingthechicanes,andslalomareaswhichwereusedtokeepthespeedsincheck.

AlthoughIdonothavetheofficialresultsasofthiswriting,herearesomeofthetimesthatweretakenfromthescoreboardpostedattheevent.

The fastest time I noticed was put up byMichaelOest ofOCR in his 2007 997GT3 inclassRS.Hecompletedthecoursein112.948seconds.

Of the attending SGVR members, LorenBeggs, of 911 Design, in class AR2 with his2006 GT3 RSR did the course in 115.141seconds. AlfredAbken, inclassGP,managedtogethis1982924Turboaroundthecoursein147.761 seconds. KentVerderico, in class IP,drivinga1983911SCdidthecoursein124.377

seconds.Kentactuallyhadcompetition in his class,andDanChalbergofSDRdid the course in 129.557seconds in his 1978 911SC. Michael D’Andreain his 1976 911S, classHSS, did the course in162.827 seconds. PeterLouie, driving a 1971 914inclassHI,did thecoursein133.913seconds.Peteralsohadcompetitioninhisclass. Eric Budai ofOCRdid the course in 124.871seconds in his 1976 911S. Will Sanchez, ofGPX,did the course in 127.642seconds in his 1967 911.Richard Clewett did the

coursein142.855seconds.Unfortunately,IdonothaveaclubaffiliationorcarinfoforRichard.Finally, LukeWang, in classNSwith his 2007CaymanS,EdwardChan inclassOSwithhis2001996,andPaulMatsushitainclassJSwithhis1973914-6didnothavetimespostedwhenIcheckedthetimingboard.

Aspecial thankyou toallof the folkswhocame out tomake this event such a success.Without volunteers, events like this just donottakeplace.

Grand National Roadster ShowTheGrandNationalRoadsterShow—theSuperBowlofHotRods—cametothePomonaFairgroundsattheendofJanuary.ItwasalongwayfromvintagePorschesbutitwasclosetomyhousesoIcheckeditout.

I’mnotcertainwhattomakeofhotrods.Thestandardforawell-donehotrodisn’tasobjectiveasthestandardforarestoredhistoricvehicle.But,hotrodderscertainlyshowenthusiasm.Personally,Iwasn’tthatdrawntomostofthecarsthere—Ijustcouldn’tseethevisionthatcreatedthem,andmanyofthenicestcarswouldhaveappealedtomemorehadthembeenkeptoriginal.

Thehigh-endhotrodsreallyareimpressiveworksofartandit’snothardtodiscerntheircreators’visions.Theycarrytheirthemesintothesmalldetailslikeseatsupports.AfewcarsadoptedWWIIaircraftthemeswithcontoured,cutoutaluminumseats.Onehadapanelfullofaircraftinstrumentsandapitottubeatthetopoftheradiatorshell.Ithinkthealtimeterwassetwrong.

AccordingtoHemmings.com,thewinnerwasPossessedcommissionedfromScott’sHotRodsinOxnard.IheardthatPossessedrepresentedabout$700,000inlabor.Itevenhadfitted,customluggagewithajarofolives.

WhileIhavetoadmiretheartistry,it’shardtounderstandspendingthatmuchforsomethingthatwillprobablycrosstheauctionblockinnottoolongwithcommentslike“youcouldn’tduplicateithattripletheprice!”YoucandriveavintagePorscheuptheCoastHighwaytoMonterey(I’vedoneit),IsupposeyoucoulddriveaHemi-poweredmusclecaruptheinterstate,butwheredoyoudriveacarwitha$75,000paintjobandnofenders?

End of an EraMydaily-driverAudineedednewtires.I’vehadtwosetsofsummer-onlyultra-high-performanceMichelin®Pilot®SportPS2™tires.Thoseare

greattireswithplentifulgrip,theAudicanwearoutasetofthesesofttiresin20,000miles.

IwaslivinginNewHampshirewhenIboughttheAudiandonereasonforselectingsummer-onlytireswastocommittogettingrealsnowtiresforthewinter.Igotthoserealsnowtiresandtheyworkedvery,verywellinthewinter.But,thosewintertiresare8yearsoldnowandunsafe.So,mydailydriverwaslockedintotheLAbasin.

Tobeabletoclimbthehillsandlookatsnowupclose(itcouldhappen)IgotasetofMichelin®Pilot®SportA/SPlusall-seasontires.They’reevenmarkedM&SsoIguessIcancruisebythosesnowchaincheckpointsifIactuallydogettothemountains.

But,itdoesmakemefeelold.ThenewtiresareZ-ratedandtheyhavelotsofgrip,butwitha45,000milewarrantytheyclearlyaren’tasperformance-orientedasthePS2s.It’skindoflikeagunfighterhanginguphissidearms.

Shopping SpreePartoftherestorationprocessisfindingandbuyingthingsforthecar.Youneedtolearnwhat’srare,what’scommon,andwhat’sagoodprice.IjumpedonafewdealsforMolotov,my356Arecently.

AweekortwoagoIjumpedonapairof“flapperboxes”thethingsthateitherdeflectwarmairintothepipestoheattheinteriorordownunderthecar.Molotovhasflapperboxesbutapreviousowner,forsomereasonIcan’tfathom,tookahacksawandloppedoffthe“ears”thatwouldsendwarmairtowardsthecarburetorsincoldweather.

GT3Cupracecarin1989,thecarwillcontestamajorinternationalhillclimbincludingmorethanfivemilesofgravel.

JeffZwart,acommercialfilmdirectorfromWoodyCreekColorado,andsix-timeclasswinneratthe

Pikes Peak Hillclimb, will challenge the 2WDTime Attack class with his specially-preparedLuminox

WatchPorsche911GT3Cupracecar.

WithtechnicalsupportfromPorscheMotorsportNorthAmerica (PMNA) andPirelli Tires, Zwartwillbecontestingthe88thrunningofthehillclimbclassic, the second oldest race in America(behindtheIndy500).Zwartsaidthatrunninga2WD,normallyaspirated,purpose-builtracecarupthe“Mountain”willbeanewexperienceforhimdespitehisninestartsatPikesPeak.

“Inpreviousyears,IhavealwaystakenastreetPorscheTurboandconverteditintoaracecar,butthistime,withthehelpofPorscheandPirelli,wehavetakenaracecarandmodifieditforPikespeak unique half tarmac-half gravel course.I practiced in the car lastweek, andwas verysurprisedatthebalance,power,andbrakingthecarprovided.Thelow-ratiosequentialgearboxkeepsmebusy

throughthe156turns,butitmakesthecarveryquick,”saidZwart.

PorscheMotorsportstartedwitha2007Cupcar,updateditto2010specifications,andinstalledanew450horsepower3.8-literenginecurrentlyinuseinthePatronGT3Challenge,AmericanLeMansSeriesChallengeClass,andthePorscheSupercup series. The engine managementmapping wasmodified to perform well in highaltitude as the race starts at 9,390 feet andfinishes at the summit, 14,110 feet above sea
