Important Information

The School of Art and Design is con-veniently located in Silver Spring, Maryland, one mile north of the Beltway on Georgia Avenue. The noncredit program offers a wide ar-ray of noncredit classes for children, teens, and adults in an art school set-ting. Most classes run for ten weeks and there are some two to four week classes for adults. There are pre-col-lege classes for students who plan to apply to a college of fine arts.

All students between the ages of 6 and 17 who enroll in a class, includ-ing adult classes, must submit the Emergency Contact Form that is at the back of this brochure. This form must be submitted to the school before classes start.

Introduction to Figure DrawingThis introductory course is a study of drawing the human form and is intended for students who have completed an introductory drawing class. Topics include proportion, basic anatomy, and a variety of draw-ing techniques including gesture, contour, outline, and tonal model-ing. Trompe-L’oeil PaintingTranslated from French, trompe- l’oeil (pronounced tràwmp lóy) means “fool the eye.” Learn the exciting art of making a two-dimen-sional drawing or painting appear three-dimensional. The class will start with lessons in line and perspective, light and shadow, then planning and composition. After transferring images, the final project will combine all the skills to create a large-scale rendering using ar-chitectural detail, still life, and draping. You will use abstraction, color, drawing, painting, and collage to create work about an issue that has meaning to you. Examples of possible content are racism, political oppression, psychological issues, and family history, to name just a few. This course will broaden the skills of students at all levels to create work of meaning to the artist. Students will keep idea/research journals during the course and will have support to create a cohesive body of work. Relief Printmaking: The Woodcut This course is an examination of the modern Japanese woodcut medi-um Sosaku-Hanga and the traditional German Expressionist woodcut. You will learn cutting and printing techniques, types of paper to use, and which tools to use. You will explore your own images through vari-ous techniques with this aqueous print medium. You will learn to print by hand as well as use the printing press. You will receive a supply list at the first class. This class is open to artists at all levels. Monotype and Screenprinting This course will cover painterly monoprinting techniques and examine the techniques of screenprinting that are appropriate for paper and fabric. Students will employ direct and indirect stencil resist materials. Presented methods will include everything from paper stencils, crayon resist, and transparent base monotypes to photographic stencils and Mylar films. This class is for artists at all levels. New Sculptural ConceptsExplore principles of three-dimensional design and composition while you learn to use alternative materials to create sculptural forms. Mate-rials from the natural world, wax, wood, wire, burlap, thread, as well as readily available plastics and everyday objects will be introduced. Simple mold making with clay and plaster also will be demonstrated. The aim of this course is to expand the repertoire of visual languages available to the student, to encourage direct invention, and to foster a method of thinking artistically through the making of sculpture. Kaleidoscope of Color in Modern ArtUsing an intuitive approach to art, you will explore how the modern masters, such as Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, Roualt, and Picasso, used colors in innovative ways. They truly shocked the art world at the time and their work has since become cornerstones of contemporary art. Collage/Mixed Media19th century Cubist artists introduced collage to create unique works of art with found objects. Collage has been used by Dada artist Kurt Schwitters and modern artist Robert Rauschenberg to create artworks that respond to personal and societal issues. In this class you will learn the art of collage and how to layer and juxtapose images, found objects, and paints on a flat surface and to create three-dimensional assemblages. Calligraphy ArtCalligraphy is the art form of writing beautifully. The writing system of the western world is presented through an historical European book hand; students will select one of three scripts (handwritten alphabets) to study in this course. You will develop manual skills as well as artistic insight during the time you spend in the classroom and at home, prac-ticing the writing of the alphabet with a hand-dipped pen upon papers that you will rule, also, by hand. Do you have original story ideas and visual concepts based on Star Wars that you would like to develop? Explore in detail how the artwork of Ralph McQuarrie and Terry Whitlach brought George Lucas’ vision to life. Using the designs of great illustrators and the plot of an unparal-leled storyteller, develop visions of outer space. Digital Photography for AdultsFor ages 16 and over. All classes are taught on Macintosh computers.

Introduction to Digital Fine Art Printing: Color If you are a film or digital photographer and would like to learn about fine art color printing, this course is for you. This class will cover all aspects of color printing—from image preparation to final print out-put—while showing you tips and tricks along the way. Topics include color management, file resolution, image optimization, creating duotones, archival printing, and mastering ICC profiles to create pro-fessional-quality prints. You will be able to print 8.5” x 11” drafts and a limited number of final prints up to 13” x 19” in class. You will need to bring your files to class on a flash drive or CD. Printer inks and paper for drafts are included in the class cost. You will provide your choice of paper for final prints. Textbook is available at the Takoma Park/Sil-ver Spring Campus Bookstore. Pre-College Portfolio DevelopmentThis studio class is offered to rising high school juniors and seniors (sophomores accepted on a space-available basis) and adults to build artistic skills and develop a well-rounded portfolio for college admis-sion reviews. Focused on drawing, you will use a variety of media including charcoal, pencil, and pastels. You will be expected to keep a sketchbook and draw from a human skeleton, a live model, and still-life objects.
