Story of the Smithtown Bull

Smithtown was first settled around 1665. The local legend of how Smithtown came to be is a

very interesting one. Legend has it that after rescuing a Native A

Chief's kidnapped daughter, John Smith was told that the Indian

Chief that he was entitled to all of the land he could encircle in one

day on a bull. Richard Smith chose to ride the bull on the

longest day of the year (summer solstice) – so he could ride as long as possible. The land he acquired in this way is said to

approximate the current town's location.
