SMITHTOWN DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE
2014 PERSONS OF THE YEAR DINNER
When I joined the Smithtown Democratic Committee in 2003 I did so because of my belief in the values of theDemocratic Party but also because I wanted to be counted as part of the opposition to the Republican Party. Advanc-ing the Democratic platform is always at the core of our activities but in these times it is also as critical to the lives ofAmericans that the Republican agenda be stopped. In 2014 this has never been truer.
From holding the line on issues ranging from the environment, healthcare, Social Security, voter protection, wages andlabor, equality in the work place, student loan debt and the simple idea that there is a social contract. The success ofour party depends on the efforts of our elected officials and those who have helped get them elected. We thrive whenwe are represented by folks who are willing to jump into the fray and go toe to toe with the opposition, even withlong odds. So in this spirit I am proud that the Smithtown Democrats have selected Congressman Tim Bishop and theExecutive Vice-Chair of our committee, Richard Macellaro as our 2014 Persons of the Year.
Since his first election in 2002 Congressman Tim Bishop has been a tireless advocate for the people of New York’s1st Congressional District. Tim Bishop has voted his conscience on a wide range of issues during his time in Wash-ington DC despite the fact that these votes have put him in the sights of the RNC and their powerful political actioncommittee allies. It is a credit to his tenacity and commitment to his values that Tim Bishop has successfully defendedhis seat from these coordinated Republican attacks. And with our help he will prevail again this year. In 2014, amongother issues, Tim Bishop is standing up for an increase in the minimum wage and standing against the ridiculous no-tion that we should be raising the interest rates on student loans or that we should be punishing the student in theevent of the death of a cosigner to their student loan. Two of my own children will be graduating from college thisyear and while I am very proud of them and excited for their future, they, like most of their peers, will be startingtheir adult life with the overhang of their student loans and entering a workplace of stagnant wages. There are peopleat the end of the policy that comes out of Washington DC and Tim Bishop has always been on their side. For thisreason Congressman Tim Bishop is a 2014 Smithtown Democratic Committee Person of the Year!
Richard Macellaro came to the Smithtown Democratic Committee after his long experience in politics during his lifein Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In Brooklyn Richard worked as a Special Assistant for two NYS Assembly members, bringing that political experience with him when he joined the Smithtown Democrats in 2008. Richard became thecommittee’s Executive Vice-Chair in 2014. Since joining the group Richard has been invaluable to the committee’s ac-tivities and to our candidate’s campaigns. Smithtown is a tough place for Democrats but Richard is never deterredfrom advancing our cause. Richard’s community involvement does not end with the Smithtown Democrats. He isvery involved with the Fr. John Papallo Lodge, Order of Sons of Italy in America located in Kings Park where heserved a term as President. Additionally, Richard is an Officer of the Lakebridge Condo II Board of Managers, inKings Park. The good people of Smithtown know Richard as someone who cares about the town and that he can beseen at most every civic event in Kings Park and Smithtown at large.
In 2010 Richard ran for the NYS Assembly against the entrenched Republican incumbent. Despite the electoral disad-vantage Richard ran a hard race and distinguished himself and the Smithtown committee. Undaunted by the Assemblyrace Richard again picked up the mantle for the local Democrats and ran for the Smithtown Town Council in 2013.Regardless of the outcome, running for office is an important form of civic duty and we owe a debt of gratitude andrespect to the people who take on the endeavor. I’m proud to know Richard Macellaro and I am especially proud thathe is a 2014 Smithtown Democratic Committee Person of the Year!
I am glad to have this opportunity along with the Smithtown Democratic Committee to honor both Tim and Richard.Congratulations to you both for this well deserved honor.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR
