“ Educators are like gardeners, the best of them are the local gardeners with the most experience, who have been living with
and nurturing the plants and being the caretaker of its ornaments. Although they are often unassuming by avoiding the gaze of people admiring the garden, yet ignoring them is indeed
ignorant heedlessness, compounded with ingratitude, while preferring others less able over them is injustice ”

Points to ponder during the break …
How much do we Muslim know about our local history?
Why here in KAMPONG GELAM we have an ISTANA (Palace) of
Malay Sultan but yet local (older) people still refer to this area as
‘Kampong Jawa’ (Javanese compound)?
Why the street names has Middle-eastern and Nusantara flavour?

was also known as Masjid Bahru (New Mosque) since it was built much
later compared to another mosque close to it, the famous Masjid Sultan,
built in 1823. It was named after its first Imam, Haji Ma'aruf, a pious
Javanese man. When he died, Shaykh Muhammad bin 'Abdullah as-
Suhaimi became the Imam and taught his students, consisting mainly of
Javanese Muslims, there. He also taught there everyday in the morning

ROLE OF SYED MUHAMMAD BIN AHMADAL-SAGOFF (NONG CHIK) Period 1820 - 1945Period 1820 - 1945
He built “Kota Nong Chik (Java Rd) “ with a prominent landmark being the
mosque in his grandmother’s name “ Masjid Hajjah Fatimah”.

scholars-teachers ( ‘Ulama-Fuqaha) from Hadramawt. Originally meant for his
family but later opened to the rest of the Muslim community.
“Kota Nong Chik” and Java Road then became center for learning Islam which
attracted students from the Nusantara. He also established many other welfare
