2. The Six Tenets:The Digital Citizen will follow six tenets ofcitizenship in order to be a positive member of his orher cyber-communities. 1. Respect yourself 2. Protect yourself 3. Respect others 4. Protect others 5. Respect intellectual property 6. Protect intellectual property 3. Respect YourselfRespecting yourself starts with the name you use topresent yourself. How often do we see social networkingor Twitter names that are suggestive and questionable, orimages posted to social sites that are inappropriate? Howwill your profile, online name and images portray you?Many of the social sites will also ask personal questions.You need to think about the potential outcomes ofanswering questions publicly.When you join any social site, be sure to keep current onthe privacy settings and keep a close eye and what isavailable to the mass public. Do not trust the defaultpreferences to protect you. 4. Recommendations Select names and images that portray you in apositive light. Do not post any information that you would notwant your mother, grandparent, teacher oremployer to see. I will select online names that are appropriate, I will evaluate items before I post online and chooseto only use positive posts, comments, images, etc. I will evaluate the consequences of posting anypersonal information. I will always act in an appropriate and consideratemanner online. 6. Protect YourselfAlways remember thatanything on the internetis never truly private. Recommendations Think about the information you are posting.What will it mean to a stranger viewing it? Whatwill it mean without the prior information yourfriends and family may have? Dont publish a schedule of your activities. Set the privacy settings on your tools to controlaccess to your updates, posts or profile. 8. Recommendations (continued)Use ethical approaches like: I will ensure that the information, images andmaterials I post online will not put me at risk. I will not publish my personal details, contactdetails or a schedule of my activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behaviordirected at me to an adult or to the siteadministrator. I will protect my passwords, accounts andresources. 9. Recommendations If you have nothing nice to say, then say nothingat all. Dont visit it; dont condone it; dont forward it. Report disrespectful behavior to an appropriateperson. 11. Recommendations (continued)Use statements and ethical guidelines like: I will show respect to others. I will not use electronic tools to flame, bully,harass or stalk other people. I will show respect for other people in mychoice of websites, I will not visit sites that are inappropriate oroffensive to others. I will not abuse my rights of access, and I willnot enter other peoples private spaces or areas. 12. Protect OthersEvery social networking site, instant messaging tool,chat room, wiki, blog and social media has a reportabuse contact. Be sure to use it when needed. We canprotect others by not tolerating and reportingbehavior that is inappropriate or unacceptable. Dont forward emails that are mean or rude, delete them. 13. Recommendations Have a policy of zero tolerance for unacceptablebehavior. Report any abuse towards anyone in your cybercommunity. Dont forward or pass on unacceptable materialdeleteit.Use statements like this: I will protect others by reporting abuse, by notforwarding inappropriate messages, cartoons, etc.; andnot visiting sites that are inappropriate. 14. Respect Intellectual PropertyThere is so much information out there, there areso many amazing materials shared and so manypeople have given their precious time for free. Giving credit when credit is due. Asking permission before you use others work. Linking to websites rather than downloading andreposting. Share your own materials with Creative CommonsLicenses. 16. Protect Intellectual PropertyBecause intellectual property belongs to someoneelse, never claim someone elses work as your ownor illegally download work that is not yours. I will cite any and all use of websites, books, media etc. I will check information to be sure it is trustworthy. I will use and abide by the fair use rules. I will use Creative Commons Licensed materials wheneverpossible. I will request to use the software and media others produce. I will use free and open source alternatives rather thanpirating software. I will purchase, license and register all software. I will purchase my music and media, and not give them awayto others. 18.
