Policy Context• UK Local Authorities evolving into Place Shapers. • New ‘Duty to Involve’ local people in decisions.• Traditional consultation methods- tried and tested, but don’tdon’t reach younger generation.• It can be difficult to ensure all participants are kept informed of any action taken as a result of consultations.
Youth Participation in Local Authority Decision-making
• Promoted in law and policy guidance- Every Every childchild has a righthas a right to be involved in decisions that affect them.• Local authorities need to move into the realms of ‘new media’- Internet- SNS.• Young people regularly use social networking sites.
Objectives • Significantly increase numbers of young people involved in local authority consultations. • Deepen and strengthen relationships with the consultation process and with those involved. • Improve the quality of youth involvement in consultation. • Improve services provided for young people.• Increase youth interest in localdemocracy.

• Aims to transform youngpeople’s involvement inthe consultation process.
• To make it meaningful and engaging.
Do:
• Have a play!
• ‘Think outside of the box’
• Think about your audience and how they currently use SNS and applications.
• Think about the barriers to participation in current provision.
• Think about your user’s journey - will they engage? Will they enjoy it? Will they keep using it?
Don’t:
• Underestimate the time and resources required to develop an application.
• See it as a replacement for current methods, see it as a supplement.
• Separate yourself from the user / stakeholder, just because you understand it, it doesn’t mean others will!
• Make it too complicated!
• Forget it is supposed to be fun!
