Modelling Quality Education for diverse learners
session 6
Your case studies
Remind us of your case studies…..
• What is the context?
• Who are the learners? • What are the key challenges?
• Introduce us to a student/group of students (name, age)
An alternative agenda?
• Read through the EFA declarations. Think about them in terms of how they relate to the personal biography.
• Consider the core educational needs/aims for this group.
• Draft an alternative Declaration, and if possible goals that would be relevant/appropriate/helpful for this person
Two models:Heneveld and Pigozzi
Why model education in this way?How do the models compare? What assumptions do they have?
of learning?of schools?
Who do these models work for? What aspects of these models work for your case study? What aspects of success/process/encounter/learning do
they not recognise?Which model do you prefer? Why?
Other models - Collaborative knowledge building (Stahl, 2000)
Modelling learning for your case study learners
Based on your earlier exercise….What are the key educational ambitions for this group?
What are the key terms? - Product? Attainment, Cohesion? Equality? Livelihood? Access?
What understandings of knowledge/learning is relevant here?
Your own model
Create your own model (of learning, of quality) relevant for your case study group.
What dimensions/indicators does this suggest?
Present your draft model
Literature Reviews
Literature review Process
Each person
• chooses a topic
• develops a list of references for the topic• Creates a short commentary that places
these articles in context.
This is a mapping exercise
Start with the Blackboard folder
For next time
Prepare a short presentation where you critique an existing educational initiative in your case study area. Consider
a) Who implements, whose idea was it? What ideas does it assume? What problem does it assume? Who are the key actors? How does it work? How far has it been successful? etc
Outline for remaining time
Session 7 – Actors, projects, funding INGOs, evaluation, reform, change, development projects.
Session 8 (date to be rearranged)Research and educational change – how research can fit it
Session 9/10Class presentations and overview/review of themes

rigorous critique of the current situation, ii) the creative exploration of what quality education could be for this
group of people.
Submission date: April 30th 2009

• A portfolio of pieces, with an overarching narrative that links them together.
• A ‘messy text’, where you juxtapose different pieces and styles.• A narrative from the point of view of one of the characters• Etc.
