•  What  does  discovery  and  access  mean  to  Jill  Q.  Public?

@michael_smit

Google  has  set  our  discovery  expecta<ons

•  Single  star3ng  point  •  Usability  •  Query-‐driven  informa3on  seeking  •  Personaliza3on

Single  star<ng  point

•  84%  of  online  informa3on  seekers  began  their  search  using  a  web  search  engine  (DeRosa  et  al.,  2011)

•  91%  of  adult  search  engine  users  reported  that  they  “always”  or  “almost  always”  found  the  informa3on  they  were  looking  for  using  search  engines  (Purcell,  Brenner  &  Rainie,  2012)

@michael_smit

But…

•  Lots  of  content  is  not  indexed  by  Google!  – “Deep  Web”

@michael_smit

Usability

•  The  single  textbox  search  •  More  importantly:  deep  understanding  of  how  users  interact  with  the  web.
