The Experience: NambadukuKey Activities

• Bringing people together to discuss issues and share experiences

After the processes….many changes!!

A group of 12 – 15 year olds research and make a film on HIV related stigma and plan its distribution

A mother encourages her daughter to talk about sex and sexuality and HIV risk openly in her college

A group of singers who travel around villages singing hymns include a song on HIV

When a young woman is thrown out of her marital home for being HIV positive, the whole village comes together to create alternative arrangements

A group of 13-15 year olds create a rap dance to reach out to young people about HIV

Women go to a neighbouring village to share their strategy for keeping themselves and their partners safe

Volunteers take a street play to the community

Post play discussions include personal experience sharing on key actions like testing, handling stigma and treatment

Young people have used the mobile phone in many ways: sending key messages through SMS to all in their address book. Sometimes making chain calls

How did this happen?

Three key processes• Facilitating discussions

and reflections in village communities

• Self assessment process

• Inspiration fairs

All 3 promoted connections between people at intellectual andemotional level

• Every human being has insights to share based on his/ her unique lived experience

• Inspiration is a key component of learning. So inspiration assets are important complements to knowledge assets

What these approaches did was….

• Cut across caste, class, gender, education and occupation barriers to recognise the value of individual insights and “ knowledge”

• Promoted self recognition of this asset

• Created the confidence to share this asset

• Currently largely at local level, but has also a national and international reach
