Why Seven Cardinal Principles are important? For eg. civic education: our rights and responsibilities to our country, our peopleWhydid Julian Paul Assange publish U.S. military and diplomatic documents in WikiLeaks?Did Edward Snowden leak top-secret United States and British government mass surveillance programs to the press?was that a 13 year school girl given a disproportionate punishment for stealing 8 coconuts?Valjean was imprisoned for 19yrs for stealing a loaf of bread?

Dewey argued that education and learning are social and interactive processes
and thus the school itself is a social institution through which social reform can and should take place.
In addition to Seven Cardinal principles Gene Carter (2012) proposed that the
purpose of schools must be preparing children to compete in the global environment.

In addition to the regular ethical responsibilities of a teacher towards the students, teacher is empowered in the Law under the doctrine of “in loco parentis”
On-line “The free dictionary” explains ‘For hundreds of years, the English common-law concept
shaped the rights and responsibilities of public school teachers: until the late nineteenth century, their legal authority over
students was as broad as that of parents. Changes in U.S. education, concurrent with a broader reading
by courts of the rights of students, began bringing the concept into disrepute by the 1960s.
Cultural changes, however, brought a resurgence of the doctrine in the twenty-first century’.
At school, teacher assumes the role of “replacement parent”

Facilitator: mentor, learning mediatorIn the 21st century: from teacher centered to
learner-centeredThe reasons for this Transition form
Teacher-centered to learner-centered, as I gather, are as follows
[a] The wealth of information has no bounds[b] The information is freely available[c] Monotonous lectures bring about the
lowest retention power in learning

However 21st century learner-centered model is not free of drawbacks. McCrorie (2006) as cited in London Deanery (2012)[online] summarizes some of the problems .
students cannot be encouraged to talk except with difficulty
students do not prepare for the sessionsone student dominates or blocks the discussionthe students want the answers not the questions

Since such are the possible classroom complications, the educator has to be a versatile character and adopt to the situations.
McCrorie(2006) as cited in London Deanery (2012) [online] says the educator, in his ideal state, with learner-centered model
is enthusiastic has organized the session well has a feeling for the subject can conceptualize the topic has empathy with the learners understands how people learn has skills in teaching and managing learning is alert to context and ‘classroom’ events is teaching with their preferred teaching style has a wide range of skills in their teaching repertoire, including
‘questioning, listening, reinforcing, reacting, summarising and leadership’

The birth of the learner-centered model is best be heard of master practitioners. Altan & Trombly (2001) says
‘Creating a learner-centered classroom is a response to the problem created when a student’s learning style differs from the teacher’s teaching style.
The way a teacher presents subject matter may conflict with students’ ideas about learning, thus resulting in no learning.
Therefore, it is the teacher’s duty to respect individual learner differences and to assist the students in discovering their own learning processes and preferences.
It requires putting students at the center of classroom organization and respecting their needs, strategies, and styles’.

learner-centered model can be adapted in educating the Children with special needs too since learning by kinesthetic movement is one of its aspects.
TRECC [2013] online states ‘Children with special needs deserve the same free
and appropriate education that all children receive.Difficult yet rewarding [eg. Taare Zameen Par]Children with special needs learn best when they
are touching and manipulating objectsThis kinesthetic movement makes their brains react
and see things in a different light.
