Rocks and MineralsWith a partner, examine the rock (granite) that you were given at the start of class.
How many different colours can you see?
List the different colours you see.
Rocks
Rock – a natural material made up of 2 or more minerals e.g. – granite or conglomerate
MineralsMineral – a pure, naturally occurring, non living, solid e.g. – mica, quartz, hornblende, feldspar
Minerals are made of elements or mixtures of elements Elements - pure substances – gold, silver, copper, zinc, etc. (e.g. quartz is a mixture of silicon and oxygen)
There are over 3000 different kinds of minerals (and each one has its own unique set of properties).We can use these differences to help identify them.
