What is an Attitude?
• Is the way we react or respond to people, objects and institutions on issues, facts or state.
• It is an outward expression (through body gestures) of our state of mind.
• It is a mirror of the mind.
• “There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. That little difference is attitude. The big difference is that whether it is positive or negative.”
-Robert Collier

• Negative environment• Unsatisfying life

• Such attitude Creates unpleasant future• It harms others• Such attitude produces negative effects
How To Change Negative Attitude
• The best way to change your mental state
• spot a negative aspect
• understand the cause
• Positive thinking is not enough
• Sometimes causes are internal rather than external
Avoid negative thoughts
• Avoid anything which triggers negative thoughts in you. It would be the newspaper or the electronic media who magnifies and are always looking for sensationalizing things.
This too shall pass• Remember the phrase….this too shall pass is applicable
for past, present and future. Nothing will continue whether the good or the bad time. The environment is dynamic and ever changing.
Take a step back
• Sometimes the cause of our depression or frustration are due to very small things, we feel lost or listless or irritated just because of the bad weather, traffic jam or a flat tyre.
• We then take out this frustration on important elements of our life example your job, colleagues, customer, family, etc.
HOW OUR ATTITUDES CHANGE
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE THEORY (LEON FISTENGER)
Story about a fox that tried in vain to reach a cluster of grapes that dangled from a vine above his head. The fox leapt high to grasp the grapes, but the delicious-looking
fruit remained just out of reach of his snapping jaws. After a few attempts the fox gave up and said to himself, ‘‘These grapes are sour, and if I had some I would not eat them."
The fox changed his attitude to fit his behavior.
People do not like to have attitudes and behavior in conflict,
this causes dissonance
