Research into Neo-Noir Production and
Distribution Companies
IntroductionUntil the likes of the huge saturation releases, such as “Gone Girl” and “Drive”, Neo-Noir was quite a niche genre and therefore you would have expected its films to be produced and distributed by independent companies. However, through my research I have found that the ‘Big Six’ (Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox) have been involved in the making of a few Neo-Noir films.
20th Century Fox
20 Century Fox has distributed Gone Girl,
Paramount PicturesDistributed: • Chinatown (1974)• Collateral (2004) • Shutter Island (2010)
Warner BrosDistributed: • Blade Runner (1982)• LA Confidential (1997)• Body Heat (1981)• The Dark Knight (2008) • Zodiac (2007) • Inception (2010)
Universal Pictures
Distributed:• Mulholland Drive (2001)• The Girl on the Train (2016)
MiramaxDistributed: • Pulp Fiction (1994)• Memento (2000)
My Decision
I want to have Warner Bros as my film’s distribution company because as a major institution it will have both the money and power to put my film through a global saturation release. Also, it may have innovative ways to distribute my film further, post cinema, other than Blu-ray and DVD. Therefore, this company will allow my film to reach a wide, mainstream audience. Moreover, through my research I can conclude that Warner Bros has distributed probably the most amount of Neo-Noir films and so it will have experience in dealing with this genre. However, I can see that Universal Pictures has recently distributed ‘The Girl on the Train’, which has been a great success and I would like to emanate the same success.
