Youngers

Page 2: Representation of blac

In the opening scene of Youngers there is a group of people who are getting their pictures taken with their partners. The mise-en-scene includes a red carpet outside a club.

Before this shot the mixed raced boy walks towards the man in the suit. When looking at the mise-en-scene you can tell that this club is in an alley way as there are dumpsters, the black man states “ what you looking at”. This is in a negative and aggressive tone, which connotes that he could be dangerous and aggressive.

The Black man is threating the younger boy about his girlfriend saying “I will look for you, I will find you an I will murk you”. This indicates that he is dangerous and acts like a threat to people. This links into Alvardos theory of Black ethnicity as he states that black people can be dangerous.

Within these scenes the girl walks up to the man asking what’s going on, however the black man pretends nothing has happened and flirts with the girl. When he is talking he used slag, for example he says ting instead of thing. This is how the black ethnicity is represented within the media and how black people speak.

This is a shot reverse shot which shows the young lady looking over her boyfriends shoulder to the mixed races boy, you also see the mixed race boy looking back at he. This could indicate that he is cheating or still likes him.

This is another shot reverse shot between the black boy and his mum. Within the first shot we can see that he is doing the washing for his mum and this is part of his chorus.

When the mum talks you can tell that her accent is from the Carrabin. She asks her son “who else is going bowling tonight”, the boy then replies with a stutter as he needs to lie to his mum.

He says “boys from Church”. This connotes that he comes from religious family. The black ethnicity is also seen as religious and to go to church every or most Sundays.
