Different social groups

• Age ranges (Child, adolescent, adult, elderly)

• Gender (Male/Female)

• Race/Nationality (English, Spanish)

• Religion (Christian, Jewish, etc.)

• Villains/Protagonist (Which we used in our own production)

Sally Blunt

Page 4: Question Two Improved

We used a female role for our main character due to our

questionnaire results. This challenges the Thriller codes and

conventions and shows originality in our production, due to main

roles and hero's in thrillers being mostly males for example, James

Bond, Bourne Identity and Dwight from Sin City. Our inspiration came

from Kill Bill who is a strong independent role.

We made our character have no dialogue and this creates mystery

and let the audience concentrate on her actions and facial

expression's rather than what she might say. At first the audience

may think that Sally is the victim but due to her actions it shows that

she is skilled and has a past of being an agent. Examples of this

include her knowledge of hiding and looking for danger, jumping

over obstacle's. Also the contents of the bag which is a FBI agent

badge, Passport and important documents shows her profession and

gives you clues to who she is and what she does.

Page 5: Question Two Improved

Hair Tied backThis shows that our character is practical and is used to moving, instead of her hair in her way, also even though she is an ex FBI agent she would have been used to have it out of her face due to uniform of an FBI agent.

Black Leather JacketA lot of inspiration for a leatherjacket came from Kill Bill. Not only does it look ordinary, but common convention of a thriller.

Black TrousersDue to her being an ex-FBI agent she would have an ordinary, simple look which is common in thrillers as they don’t wish to draws attention to them selves rather than a suit or more professional clothes as an FBI agent would wear.

White trainers Grey BagThe bag being a neutral colour of grey raises questions for the audience due to her being so attached to it. Inspiration fromThe Bourne Identity.

Black TopBlack clothing is neutral, and also she doesn't bring much attention to herself.

Practical for running and black and white are a common thriller code and convention because it symbolises the conflict between good and evil. Also we wanted our character to look ordinary, this could have been done to hide her previous job as an FBI agent and to disguise herself.

Sound

The soundtrack we used

was a fast pace, drum beat

music which fit with the

theme and action of the

situation. It adds to the

suspense of the chase and is

a common code and

convention of a thriller.

We used a foley

sound of breathing to

increase the suspense

and show that our

character is nervous.

By using a foley

sound of footsteps

it created sound

perspective which

enhances the sound

to the drama and

thrill of the film.

Page 7: Question Two Improved

Cinematography

We used a close up

shot of the

characters face to

show their

emotions and

reactions due to the

situation.

A point of view shot lets

the audience see what the

character is looking at,

and lets them be a part

of the action, also

creating a sense of

realism.

By using this low

shot in the beginning,

of feet running up

stairs, it hides the

identity of the

character and the

quick pace creates

more action.

Editing

We used editing to create a black

and white effect which is a

common code and convention of a

thriller. It also fits the theme

of good and evil indicated by

black and white.

We used slow motion in parts

of the scene as it adds more

effect to the situation and

builds up suspense for the

audience as the realisation of,

for example being shot, has

really happened.

We used dissolve when sally was shot, indicating to the audience that she

was badly injured, therefore creating suspense for the audience and asks

questions towards the narrative such as, will she survive?, is she the main

character?

Page 9: Question Two Improved

Villain

Page 10: Question Two Improved

We decided to used a group of villains to make our film

more intense and create a feeling of no escape, popular in

common code and conventions of thrillers such as Dark

Night Rises and Sin city.

We also used masks to create secret identities and keep

an air of mystery about the villains. They all wore dark

clothing so they could blend into the shadows and create

the contrast of good and evil.

They were very confident as they watched Sally, using

slow movements at times as if they knew they were going

to get what they wanted. With sly movements making

them seem unnerving as it makes them appear that they

will reach their target no matter what.

Page 11: Question Two Improved

White MaskUsed to hide the identity of the villain and making him seem inhuman and sinister. We got our inspiration from Dark Knight and Set Up asthey are both thrillers and used the mask to hide theiridentity.

Black Hood

JacketAnother method of hiding identity and a suspicious look for our villain also indicating that they are trained and know how not to be seen.

Black

Trousers

GunCommon code and convention of a thriller. Builds up suspense and anticipation and danger.Inspired from many thrillers e.g. Face off, Bourne Identity, James Bond, Sin City.

Group of Villains

Causes a more intense sense of danger and may cause the audience to think that they may just be accomplices for someone similar to Dark Knight as there where a group of villains working for the main protagonist.

Shows that he is all in black, fitting into the theme of the characters and this is a common code and convention of thrillers. Also showing the contrast of good and evil.

Sound

We used a foley sound

for a gun shot, which

was also sound

perspective as it

increases the dramatic

feel and atmosphere,

this shocks the

audience.

Whenever a villain

appeared we used a

sting to indicate and

warn the audience that

they are dangerous and

that it will also

prepare them

emotionally when a

sound motif is used to

show that the villain is

close or arrived.

Even though the

heartbeat belongs to

Sally, it has increased

due to the villains

appearance. This

shows how affected

and scared she is by

the them.

Page 13: Question Two Improved

Editing

By using short takes it

make the scene more

dramatic and fits the

fast pace of the action

and makes the villain

seem dangerous as

you can’t escape.

This low lighting

makes the villain look

very menacing and

resembles shadows

which match their

character as they are

very stealthy and fast.

Even though most of the

takes are quick, a long

shot builds up the

suspense. When the

villain is holding the gun

it creates a feeling of

panic and danger and you

know something will

happen.

Page 14: Question Two Improved

Cinematography

Over the shoulder

shot shows that he

is watching sally

and builds the

suspense for the

audience.

High angles

portray the

villain as

dominating and

over powering.

Point of view shot

lets the audience

see what the

character is seeing

and lets them be a

part of the action

also creating a

sense of realism.
