Q4: How Did You Use Media Technologies In The Construction And Research, Planning And

Evaluation Stages? (Internet Websites)

By Alice Venard

Presentation websites.

In order to gain marks for my coursework, we had to use a variation of different presentation websites in order to show use of

different media technologies.

SlideShare:SlideShare is a Web 2.0 based slide hosting service. Users can upload files privately or publicly in the following file formats: PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote or OpenDocument presentations. Slide decks can then be viewed on the site itself, or embedded on other sites. Launched on October 4, 2006, the website is considered to be similar to YouTube, but for slideshows. The website was originally meant to be used for businesses to share slides among employees more easily, but it came in useful when presenting my planning, research and other stages throughout my media studies course.

Powtoon:Powtoon is an online presentation website used for creating animated presentations and videos. Powtoon allows you to create short animations which is a unique way of presenting information but still keeps the professional element needed. I used this for my coursework as it gives the viewer a break from the constant slideshares and prezi’s and allows them to just sit back and enjoy the presentation.

Prezi:Prezi is a presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. This was an effective and unique was of presenting some of my research into my foundation and advanced portfolio and I I used this for my evaluation questions. Prezi allows you to store a lot of information onto one ‘canvas’ without it looking cluttered and messy, which came in useful throughout the duration of my media coursework. Prezi is quick and easy to use and you can edit your work at anytime and it will automatically change no matter when or where you’ve embedded it.

Social MediaSocial media is a tool that allows people to create, share or exchange

information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. Social Media is defined as a “group of internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of web 2.0 and that allow

the creation and exchange of user-generated content.

Twitter:Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140- character messages called ‘tweets’. I used twitter during my coursework throughout my research and planning stages, as a means to get my survey to reach a lot of people and my peers.

Facebook:Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who live around them. I used facebook during my coursework primarily to keep in contact with my actors as it enables you to make group chats thus making keeping in contact a lot easier.

Pinterest:Pinterest is a web and mobile application company, which operates an eponymous photo sharing website. Users can create mood boards. This was useful in the early pre production stages as it allowed me to collect a series of images that reflected the mood/tone of my product.

SurveyMonkey:SurveyMonkey provides free, customizable surveys. This tool was extremely useful in the research stages of my coursework, as it permitted me to conduct audience research into aspects such as; what they like to see in a music video. I also used this tool in my evaluation stages when determining whether my product was successful.

DaFont:DaFont is a complication of files for fonts to download for free. They are categorized by topic, name, date and popularity. This website was essential throughout both years of my Media Studies A Level, as a variety of fonts gave more marks and allowed you to give off any representation by the use of style of font. For example, the font ‘Dubriel’ was used for my ancillary text. This font style is the same as high end fashion magazine ‘Vogue’ which connotes my artist to being high class, sophisticated and elegant.

YouTube To MP3:YouTube to MP3 is a peer 2 peer site which allows users to convert youtube videos into a MP3 format which they can listen to. I used this website in post-production stages when converting Annie Harmeston’s version of “Thinking Out Loud” to use for my final product.
