Programmed Instructional material
Objectives
At the end of this module you will be able to-
Know about the meaning of global warming
Know about different green house gases
Know about various sources of green house
gases
Know about causes of global warming
Know about control about on global
warmingLet’s start module
2
Global warming means gradual increase in world’s
temperature caused by green house gases the impact of
global warming can be seen in sea levels , rainfall and
human health.
Massive deforestation, burning of fossil flues,
industrial emissions etc have resulted to an increase in
green house gases around earth’s atmosphere.
The green house gases trap sun rays in the earth’s
atmosphere causing the temperature to rise resulting
in what is known as global warming.

The heat would have otherwise released if the green
house gases were not present in such huge quality.
The warming of atmosphere due to the presence of
green house gas this is responsible for global warming
is carbon dioxide[CO2] others include nitrous oxide,
chlorofluorocarbon[CFC], methane etc .

Sources of Green house gases
• Carbon dioxide [CO2] : the major green
house gas is carbon dioxide. The source of
carbon dioxide includes burning of fossil
fuels, levels increases as a consequence of
deforestation.
• Methane [ CH4] : methane is responsible for
about 20 % of the green house effect. The
source of methane includes rice , paddies ,
burning of wood , cattle , wetland , land
fields etc

• Chlorofluorocarbon [CFC]: about 15% of
greenhouse effect is due to these gases. In
case of heat absorbing power it is thousand
time more effective than CO2. The source of
CFC includes air conditioning industry ,
foam packing industry etc.
• Nitrous oxide: nitrous oxide is responsible
for 5% of the green house gases . Its sources
are coal burning, breaking down of
chemical fertilizers, biomass burning etc.

• Global warming can be control if we stop
deforestation [cutting of trees] , start and
adopt afforestation [establishment of new
forests], reforestation [re-establishment of
old forest] and other forest conservation
methods. Reduce the use of fossil fuels in
power and electricity generation.
