PRODUCTION AND
DISTRIBUTORS By Sujata
12. Who produces and distributes horror films?
20th century fox
• 20th century fox is a big filmmaking company, it is included
in 6 major American film studios category. The company
was founded in 1935 and has been successful throughout
the years. It has produced many Hollywood blockbusters
such as Alien series (1979,1986,1992,1997,2007), The
Omen series (1976,19811990,1991), What lies beneath
(2000). 20th century fox produces and distributes a lot of
franchise film. This is a way for the company to maximize
their film profits
• The company is a subsidiary of News corporation, which
is owned by the big media conglomerate Rupert Murdoch.
Hammer Films
• UK based film production company
• Best known for Gothic ‘Hammer Horror’
• They are known for these horror genres: Sci-fi, thriller, film
noir, comedies
• Once dominated horror film market and distributed films
world wide-This was due to a distribution partnership with
major company such as Warner Bros.
Films produced by Films
• The Mummy (1959)
• Dracula (1958)
After the production of these
films the production company
established “hammer horror”
this is similar to Gothic cinema
• The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
followed by a franchise of
Frankenstein films
Typical hammer horror films
Blumhouse Productions
• American film production company
• Produces micro and low-budget genre films such as Insidious, Paranormal Activity, Sinister franchise.
• Insidious grossed over $97 million worldwide on a budget of $1.5m
• I chose to do my case study on this because of the plausible horror films they have produced. As supernatural is going to be our sub genre for our film, this company would be a very good choice as it works with low-budget films.
• The upcoming horror films they are producing is ‘Jessabelle’ for Lions gate.
Horror films produced by Blumhouse
• Sinister series
• Paranormal Activity series
• Insidious
• Ouija
• The Purge
Evaluation
• Hammer films which produced ‘The woman in black’ are
more towards Gothic horror, whilst Blumhouse
productions is more supernatural horror. The sub-genre
I’m hoping to convey through the film opening is a
supernatural horror.
• This is because right now there seems to be a rise in
popularity for supernatural horror (as shown in my
audience research). As a result for the suitability of the
film genre and the fact that it works on micro scale on a
low budget films is another factor that attracted me to this
production company.
Screamtime films
• Distributes independent horror films
• All films and DVDs are self created and sold exclusively
sold by Screamtime films
• They distribute in VHS and DVD formats, as well as
through digital channels.

What company would be suitable for
distributing our film?
• All these companies are similarly suitable to distribute
our film. However hammer films has a reputation for
successful films and their recent success was ‘The
woman in black’ which includes few of the things we
want to include in our film. However realistically
speaking ‘Scream time films’ are also a good choice, if
our film is low budget or like a start up.
