• Teaching approach: Communicative Approach• Integration of skills: Listening mainly to the teacher and ‘Harry Potter

and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ trailer. Reading a short text about Harry Potter’s school preferences. Speaking about their favourite subjects

• Materials and resources: a word search to review days of the week1, pictures related to Harry Potter downloaded from the Internet2, ‘Harry Potter’s and the sorcerer’s Stone’ film trailer3, a laptop, two worksheet assembled by the teacher, whiteboard, blu tack.

• Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: laptop to show a film trailer• Seating arrangement: Horseshoe • Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the

class: students might get anxious because they will not be able to understand the whole trailer, praise will be used in order to reassure them. Timing could not work as planned, in such a case I will assign the follow-up activity as homework.

• Classroom management strategies: as during the previous class there were two students who did not feel involved in the lesson, during this one I will change the sitting arrangement and also, as the classroom is rather small, they will have difficulties in wandering around the classroom

• Potential problems students may have with the language: students might have difficulties identifying conjunctions; I will provide them with more examples than the ones presented in the reading section.

• Assessment: Listening comprehension will be assessed through a multiple choice exercise. Comprehension of reading passage will be assessed by a matching exercise.

Routine I will greet Ss and ask them how they are in L2 so as to let them know the lesson has started.

Warm-up 5’ Purpose: to revise ‘Days of the Week’ by doing a word search and talking about School SubjectsI will ask students ‘Remember the days of the week? Which are they?’ As students say the days I will repeat and praise them by say ‘Good!/ Great!.I will then distribute the following word search for Ss to complete in pairs and then glue it in their notebooks. I will show the photocopy and say ‘This is a word search, you need to find and circle the days of week. Let’s see who is the first one to find all the days’

After Ss finish this activity I will ask ‘What subject’s on Monday?’ EA ‘(Science)’, then ‘When’s English?’ EA ‘It’s on Tuesday and Thursday’

Transition: Very good, everyone! Now, let’s talk about a different kind of school.

Development

Activity 1 10’Purpose: to activate Ss’ prior knowledge and pre-teach key vocabulary related to Harry PotterBefore listeningI will use the following pictures in order to trigger Ss knowledge about Harry Potter and attempt to elicit his name.

3

Page 4: Primary Lesson 2

I will say ‘In this school, you need one of these balls for PE lessons and also one of these brooms’ as I stick them on the board.

In case Ss spot that it is a quidditch ball and relate it to Harry Potter, I will praise them and go on showing the rest of the pictures. As I stick them, I will go on writing the names of each of these so that Ss have the written from connected to the visual stimulus.

Last, I will ask Ss ‘Do you remember the name of Harry Potter’s school?’ and stick the following picture on the board, I will write under it ‘Hogwarts School’. I will go on asking ‘What kind of school is Hogwarts? Is it a normal school?’ EA ‘No!’ T ‘You’re right, it’s not a normal is school, it’s a magic school! It’s a school for wizards. Harry Potter is a wizard’ Here I will stick Harry Potter’s picture and write ‘Wizard’ under it.

I will also add some physical description since it will be the topic of the following lessons ‘Harry Potter wears glasses and has a scar on his forehead’

Transition: ‘Good! Now we are going to watch a video of Hogwarts school, pay attention and listen.’ I will signal my eyes and ear as I say this.

Activity 2 10’Purpose: to watch ‘Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone’ trailer and complete a multiple choice exercise I will play the video once for Ss to watch, I will point to the pictures on the board and ask them ‘What items can you recognise from the video? Is there a

broom/ wand / owl?’ and so on in order to check they understood vocabulary and to prepare them for the following activity. I will distribute the following copy:

I

will tell students ‘In this activity, you have to circle the correct option. Let’s read the sentences, who would like to read?’Once all the sentences have been read, I will play the trailer a second time and check the answers. Should any difference or doubt arise, I will play the trailer one more time stopping where necessary to check the correct option.

Transition: Well done, everyone! We are now going to read about Harry Potter’s favourite subjects at Hogwarts school; this is his diary. Ss are familiar with the concept of ‘diary’ since they work with in their class course book.

5

Page 6: Primary Lesson 2

Dear Diary,

Hogwarts School is great! It’s a school for wizards. I have a lot of new subjects. I like Astronomy and Flying lessons, but I don’t like History of Magic because it’s boring. I also like Quidditch because it’s exciting. My favourite subject is Potions because it’s wonderful. Potions is on Monday; my favourite day of the week!

Activity 3 10’Purpose: To introduce conjunctions AND, BUT and BECAUSE through a short text about Harry Potter’s school subject preferences. I will say ‘This is Harry Potter’s diary, let’s read about his school subjects’ I will distribute the following passage for Ss to read.

I will draw Ss attention to the words in bold and provide them with examples which I will write on the board. Such asI like PE and ICTI like Geography, but I don’t like MatchI like History because it’s interesting

I will ask two/three Ss ‘What are you favourite subjects? Why?’ In order to elicit answers where the use of these conjunctions are necessary.

Closure 5’Purpose: To check comprehension of conjunctions and end the lesson.

6

Page 7: Primary Lesson 2
