Oh no! Look at all that snow! What am I going to do?

Johanna, what are you talking about?

I hate driving in the winter. It seems so dangerous!

It can be, but if you prepare for it you can really reduce the danger.

Really?

For sure. I have been attending a seminar at work about driving safely in the winter. It has been a big help.

Sure, there are a lot of things we can do to prevent accidents. The first thing is that we should simple stay off the roads if the road conditions are very bad.

What have you learned so far? Do you have any tips for me?

That’s a good idea. I just read an article saying that in the event of a blizzard we should simply stay off the road until the snow plows were able to clean things up. Exactly, bad road conditions can be a real hazard.

I guess driving in bad conditions can really affect traction on the road.

That’s for sure. Black ice can be a huge problem.

Black ice? What’s that?

Black ice is ice on the road that’s not visible. The ground may look dry even when it’s covered in ice. That could be very bad.

Yes, so caution is always necessary. Another problem in the winter is low lying fog which can be very dangerous as well.

So the seminar covers all these points?

Yes, it does. There is still time to sign up. Why don’t you attend with me? I’m sure you will learn a lot.

When is the next class?

Tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. I’ll pick you up at 6:45!
