We recently asked our readers to send us memories of school. (0) A

I vividly remember my first day at primary school. I was five years old and very proud of my school

uniform. (1) .... I also had a brand new school bag for all my books. My mother took me to the

school gates and I joined all the other new pupils. There was an air of expectation. (2) .... I couldn’t

understand why. This was an adventure! I let go of my mother’s hand and walked bravely to the

door where there was a very nice teacher to welcome us. She asked my name, looked at her list

and told me to go upstairs to Room 4. (3) .... and to be honest I loved every minute of my time

there.

The only subject I ever got high marks in was French and I guess that was because of our teacher.

She only had to look at us in a certain way (4) .... . I don’t remember any other teachers having our

respect in the way that she did. It was obvious to all of us that she was passionate about teaching

(5) .... . She always gave us a lot of homework and loads of tests and to this day I can remember

some of the poetry we had to learn by heart. (6) .... and I now also teach French.

When I think of my school days I think of my best friend Emma. On our first day at secondary school

we ended up sharing a desk and from then on we did everything together. (7) .... We were both

pretty competitive and always wanted to come top. Emma was much better than me at Maths

and the science subjects, (8) .... so we would help one another with revision before exams.

Although we don’t live in the same place now we still speak to each other every week.

William Logan. Yes, everybody in the school knew William. (9) .... Detention day was Thursday and

nine times out of ten, you’d find William there. It’s not that he was bad exactly, but I think the

teachers just couldn’t handle his attitude. (10) .... He often skived off when he was bored, which

was most of the time, and he’d be seen wandering around town. Somehow despite being absent

so often, he managed to pass his exams and I’ve heard he’s doing really well now.
