Incoming or Receptive Skills

• Determining one’s purpose in listening or reading

• Determining the author’s purpose for talking or writing.

• Noting supporting details or examples

• Predicting possible outcome.

Synthesizing or Reflective Skills

• Relating material to one’s experience and previous knowledge.

• Building associations between the known and the unknown.

• Guessing the sender’s message or purpose.

• Noting the needed information.

Reporting or Expressive Skills

• Distinguishing reports from other kinds of communication.

• Recognizing and stating purpose of a report.

• Identifying the intended readers or listeners.

• Avoiding common errors in grammar.
