Learning to Become Better at Peer Review
TIPS FOR PEER REVIEWING
Giving Criticism:
• Keep to the topic of the paper.
• Read aloud to the author.
• Write down responses on peer review sheet.
Giving Criticism:
• Annotate—write directly on the essay.
• Give oral feedback—talk to the author.
• Provide positive feedback as well.
Giving Criticism
• Ask yourself constructive questions such as, “What part of the essay works well?”
• Guide, don’t lead—give hints/tips rather than rewriting the paper.
• Give at least 3 pieces of advice.
Receiving Criticism:
• Be prepared! Bring all drafts.
• Be on time.
• Improve your listening skills.
• Take notes about what the peer reviewer is saying.
• Ask for clarification if needed.
