INAUGURATIONOn February 20th, 2007 the city of La Serena
celebrated the grand opening of the Paul Harris English Language Lab and Library. Located in downtown La Serena, the lab resulted from a joint effort of Rotary Clubs from Marcellus, New York, District 7150, USA and the Rotary Club San Joaquín, District 4320 , La Serena, Chile. Thanks to the administration and strong support from La Serena Municipality, the lab is functioning on a full time basis throughout the entire year. The Paul Harris Lab and Library is located in the Public High School Ignacio Carrera Pinto on 725 Cantournet Street, La Serena. The Lab and Library is open to all the people from the community who are interested in learning and improving their English skills.

More than 500 people are currently attending English classes at the Paul Harris Lab, La Serena,from Monday to Friday 9:00 A.M to 9:00 P.M and Saturdays 9:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M. Students from different public schools, institutions (hotels, catering, tourism, sales, army, banking) and other organizations (Rotarians, craft people, housewives, staff from La Serena Municipality, elderly groups from the community, disabled people, community groups) use the lab. We have students from all ages (10 to 75 years old) and interests.

DON REESE VISIT
On May 20, 2008, Don Reese, Past District Governor from New York, Alfonso López from Rotary San Joaquín La Serena and Yesica Bravo Coordinator, Paul Harris Lab La Serena met Raúl Saldivar Auger, La Serena Mayor. PDG Don thanked Raúl Saldivar Auger for supporting The English Changes Lives Project in La Serena city. English Changes Lives is an ongoing project focusing on using English to create new opportunities for local citizens.

WORKSHOP On May 23, 2008, PDG Don Reese (D7150)
presented a workshop on “English Changes Lives” to over 80 teachers from La Serena, Coquimbo, Ovalle, Tongoy, Salamanca and Valley del Elqui. In addition to the teachers, guests included Rotarians and officials from La Serena. Special guests included Judith Beck and Jerome Hay from North Carolina, USA. The invitation to attend was extended by the Municipality of La Serena, PDG Don and Yesica Bravo, Lab Coordinator. This was the largest project workshop in four years.

Our team consists of six highly qualified staff members. María Mercedes Abalos (Municipal Coordinator), Erika Rodriquez, Christian Castillo and Yesica Bravo are English teachers. Yesica is also the Lab and Library Coordinator. Marlet Lagos is our English-Spanish translator, while Juan Diaz is our asistant and computer teacher.
