Understanding the meaning of information to translate, Application means using learned information in relevant situations to interpret and illustrate. Analysis means breaking down information into its separate components so that its structure is to relate and appraise. Synthesis means putting components together to create a pattern or a structure which would be new or different to design and formulate finally, Evaluation means judging the value of information or material based on personal or given criteria to draw conclusions or to evaluate the value.

This is the presentation of experiments and results on the concept of PARALLELISM

The concept of Parallelism by Ranjan Raghuvir Joshi.

This exercise would help grow the cognitive domain (ref. Bloom, et al, 1956).

The Cognitive domain deals with comprehension.Understanding the meaning of information to translate,Application means using learned information in relevant

situations to interpret and illustrate. Analysis means breaking down information into its separate components so that its

structure is to relate and appraise. Synthesis means putting components together to create a pattern or a structure

which would be new or different to design and formulate finally, Evaluation means judging the value of information or

The term Comparison should not misunderstood against the termParallelism. As mentioned at the beginning its comprehension in

today’s world of Globalization, Multiculturalism is a positive element for the growth of democratic thinking. In single culture

the literature or visual art forms when evolves is called Intracultural but in case of different cultures when new forms

evolves is called Intercultural. (Reference: “Parallelism”: Dr. Anand Patil – 1996).

Here is an attempt to understand the above said information in final details in context to actual exercise given herewith. Anyone

can take a clue from this to study the concept of Parallelismdiscussed here.

Page 6: Parallelism Experiments & Results

The term Globalization became popular in India during 1990 after the government of India adopted liberal financial policy.

I happened to be part of Global graphic design and communication education during 2000 to 2006 A.D.

in Mumbai I had to study different cultures in context to the said education. As a senior faculty in the said discipline, I had to

conduct a course from Canada where French language is focus. This has compelled me to study

its socio-cultural and communication issues. In that context two artist that is Savignac from France and

S. D. Phadnis from India (Maharashtra), I found their work structure very much parallel in terms of socio-cultural and communication issues. To understand this concept following insights could help to

visualize this exercise. The science of Anthropology has been useful to know the behavioral patterns of living beings in the development of human civilization. Art

community did not paid much attention to this side of science. Today “Global to Local and Local to Global” is the key notes for

effective communicate.

To illustrate the point look at this paragraph from the book “A Critique of Literary values” by the great Marathi poet and professor of English Prof. Vinda Karndikar.

“What is the criterion of the literary greatness?

Criterion primarily is FORM. When in literary works the PATTERN created by interrelations of EMOTIONAL experience achieves a rich complexity, they become abiding works of LITERATURE. Therefore, the fineness or beauty of fine arts resides in aesthetics form, aesthetics form resides in rhythm, and rhythm resides in emotional relations and emotional relations reside in certain words, so series is completed.”

Savignac gave radical approach to the French advertising. Visual Gag means humor, Visual Scandal means Empathy. Savignac Introduced new imagery. S. D. Phadnis created smiling pictures. S. D. Phadnis created Caption- less visuals, but not cartoons, and developed new kinetic humor. S. D. Phadnis echoes of middle class attitude in “Transition”, sentimental and value based. Savignac and S. D. Phadnis created Marathi and European literary forms. Savignac and S. D. Phadnis juxtaposedshapes, color, line etc. Savignac and S. D. Phadnis created Single image style with surprised shock. (Surrealism).

Savignac and S. D. Phadnis:

Crafty men condemn studies, Simple men admire them and Wise men use them-Francis Bacon on Studies. We are made wise not by the recollections of our past but by the responsibility for future-George Bernard Shaw.

1) Salvador Dali & Max Ernst by Denver Kotian, Rachana Sansad. It is good to study surrealist from two European countries. The application of hyperactive realistic style, Greek and Roman sculpture resemblances, etc. is worth noting points you have made. The presentation is excellent. This should be a motivating factor to conceptualized communication campaign in your upcoming art carrier. Wish you all the best.

2) Sri Lanka-India by Madhurika Shende, Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art. You have taken a good example to look at parallelism. Sri Lanka was once a part of India in ancient times. The dance forms when seen in context to their respective current cultures may have evolved differently today. The South India and Sri Lanka both have roots of martial arts. Kandyan and Thandav Dance both are very articulate in action. It is nice to read in your text detail discussion. Wish you all the best.

3) Communism in China and Cuba by Manasi Shetye, Sophia Polytechnic. This is very different subject that you have taken which I appreciate. Two different cultures and same ideology, you have interestingly placed graphic forms that depicts concept. Your final observations of American presence are worth studying to visualize any communication medium.Wish you all the best.

4) Raghu Rai and David Burnett byManasvi Mehta, Sophia Polytechnic. Yes, we have to look at two such great photographers in context to each one’s perceptions. Both of them believe in the fundamental idea that photography is an art. Your selection of visuals is apt to the point of view for the said subject. Presentation in black and white is very impressive. Do not give it up here please continue this study. Try to learn how to create scroll format. I had to run around to combine the story. Wish you all the best.

5) Kerala and Rajasthan by Manish Patil, Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art. The south edge and north edge areas of India. How a parallel seen in art, culture and visual vocabulary are interesting to study. You have done the final presentation as per the exercise requirements, which are fine, but if you see, Kerala is on the coastline of India whereas Rajasthan on the desert land. I wish, have this been reflected in your textual observations it would be interesting. Wish you all the best.

6) Musical theatre in India and Europe by Mitali Mehta, Sophia Polytechnic. Kutiyattam, the mode of Sanskrit theatre from Kerala and Opera In 1637 the idea of a "season" (Carnival) of publicly attended emerged in Venice this parallel study is interesting. Your visuals are eye catching and curiously look for more information. Take care to learn about scroll format presentation. Wish you all the best.

7) Kerala and Kokan by Pooja Tikhe, L S Raheja,Bandra. Pooja your attempt is good but something is missing in the total presentation. Typographic attempt is confusing yet one should not give up as communication artist. The discussion about Aryan and Dravidians must be on proper study. Try to learn technical aspect of scroll format for the correct application of the final subject. I honestly appreciate your different attempt. Wish you all the best.

8) Heading is missing… Pratik Mhatre, L S Raheja,Bandra. You are certainly on the right mode of thinking. What about the basics of communication arts elements?, I had to search for the heading of the final scroll. Bengal and Maharashtra are almost identical so expected to search for correct parallels. Satyajit Ray and Dadasaheb Phalke are not contemporary. They are not parallel in terms of their filmmaking ideology. I like your enthueasim to do the connectivity. Wish you all the best.

9) Performing Arts of 17th century Indian and European, by Rini Mitra, Rachana Sansad. Your subject is classic. To cover in such small scroll format is too difficult. Presentation is fine but text is tiny to read. I think you could have focused on only one of the parts of this huge topic. My Savignac/ Phadnis presentation are doing the same what you are trying to attempt. Anyway, it is nice show. Wish you all the best.

10) eYeGlasSes by Ushma Dharod, Rachana Sansad. I do not understand why you left one frame. Your attempt is on the right track though it was saying more about connection rather than parallelism. Anyways do not give up. Make it for your portfolio. Wish you all the best.

Page 49: Parallelism Experiments & Results

11) Mahatma Gandhi and Adolf Hitler by Vijay Manure, L S Raheja, Worli. This is one of the best of all the lot, yet it directs you to mode of comparisons, which is not our task. I whole-heartedly appreciate the most dynamic typographic play in the final presentation. Yes, you are correct that people remember both of them today for their respective qualities.

Page 50: Parallelism Experiments & Results

What is the purpose of civilization? Why do we remember Gautama Buddha? Why Christ remembered? Why non-violence is so important? You know the answers to all these questions. We as a communication artist must be sensitive to such issues besides AESTHETICS.Wish you all the best.

Page 51: Parallelism Experiments & Results

12) The Maharashtra and Orissa Culture, Harsha Gharat, L S Raheja, Bandra. Your scroll is presentation is impressive. Tribal paintings, Paintings on cloths, Lacquered craft, first newspaper, and wooden toys all this is beautifully presented. Your research particularly of newspaper correctly displayed. Wish you all the best.

Research Institute of Visual communication and visual literacy. (Thane, Maharashtra-India) Ranjan Raghuvir Joshi. We should not compartmentalize the art in general. The age of industrialization in the process of civilization has redefined many aspects of human habitat. Art for commercial/commerce purpose, art applied for, with aim, idea, or for concepts in the development of Design plans etc. gave new connotations to Fine Art. This term is holistic because it covers art in all dimensions. Human sensitivity and art of expression/ communication defines the outcome. The concept of Globalization first defined by Marshall McLuhan in 1967’s famous book “Medium is the Massage”. He says, “The environment that man creates becomes his medium for defining his role in it. The invention of type created linear, or sequential, thought, separating form action. Now, with T. V. and folk singing, thought and action are closer and social involvement is greater. We again live in a village.” In a village drop of tiny septic pin heard instantly on other side of the corner. He says, “The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village.” The age of information and knowledge is redefining the McLuhan’s said theory. We as communication artists must be aware of such happenings around us.The specially designed exercise on parallelism is aiming to grow as an individual in today’s faster electronic age. You can extend this scroll into any chosen media for specific campaign planning. We can look at all our crafts of Illustration, Calligraphy, Typography, Photography, Printing and today’s Digital Manipulations for reinterpretations in context to applied art. Communication Arts Guild’s vision defined by its founders in early 1948/50 was to see artist’s role more meaningful unlike his other contemporary professionals. Following students participated and only those in bold letters submitted the final scroll to me on 2nd

2011 by 11.30 p.m. as per scheduled time prescribed.
