Year 13 Statistics and Modelling

In Statistics we investigate data. Statistics is a

important tool on many subject areas where correct

interpretation of data is needed.

We look at different distributions, bi-variate and

time series data and also investigate probability.

Most of the datasets are real and from a variety of

contexts from Science, geography, economics

amongst other subjects.

Achievement Standards are done on the

computer using a statistics package

called GenStat.

Year 13 CalculusIf you enjoyed the Algebra and Calculus topics at

Year 12 ( and below) you will probably enjoy

Calculus. Calculus is a branch of Mathematics

focused on Differentiation and Integration.

Calculus is the study of change, in the same way

that Geometry is the study of shape.

Calculus has widespread applications in Science,

Economics and Engineering.

Year 13 ChemistryChemistry is the study of the composition,

structure, properties and reactions of matter.

• Analytical Chemistry: Investigate the amount of a

substances in a commercial or environmental context.

• Discover the application of redox reactions to

electrochemical cells (Batteries).

• Examine structure, bonding and periodic trends in

greater detail.

• Determine energy changes in chemical reactions.

• Investigate even more organic reactions and find out

why polyesters are called polyesters.

• Delve further into the world of acids, bases and

equilibrium reactions.

• Find out the answer to “How soluble is insoluble?”

Assessment is ¾ external and ¼ internal. The course

includes practical work, problem solving and describing,

explaining and discussing chemical ideas. Chemistry is the

essential science for almost all scientific careers including

health sciences.

through either a study in painting, sculpture, printmaking or a combination of these

fields.

The focus is on developing stronger individual skills of expression by researching

contemporary and historical Art practise and extending your abilities through the creation

of original works

Year 13 MusicIf you want to gain the majority of your 24 credits in Performance and

Composition, you choose PRACTICAL MUSIC. If you are less strong in these areas but enjoy the musicology aspect of the subject and would like develop

these skills, you choose MUSIC STUDIES.

PRACTICAL MUSIC Involves:

Solo and group performance.

Composing a portfolio of music.

Aurally identifying the elements and features of music from a range of genres.

MUSIC STUDIES Involves:

Examine the expressive qualities of music.

Research a music topic.

Arranging Music.

• History is about the study of past events, people, places, issues,

movements and much much more. In History we investigate what

has happened in the past to help us understand the world today.

• In 2011 we will investigate:

1. 19th Century New Zealand History (externally assessed)

2. A special study which you will choose (internally assessed)

• A highlight of the course is the History field trip to Rotorua
