Opening Scene Resident Evil

By Tom Young

Scene 1

The scene begins with a women standing in a busy road, the camera starts with a tilt shot which beings with her shoes and gradually goes up until it gets to her face . The scene of the women switches between two different camera angles, the original tilt shot and a birds eye view shot where the women is directly in the middle. The women is clear to stand out because she is not carrying an umbrella like everyone else in the scene. This is made clear in the birds eye view shot when the girl is standing in the middle surrounded by colourful umbrellas of the people walking by. The colourful umbrellas contrast with the girls black/dark clothing, This suggests an evil presence.

Scene 2

She is also known to be a women as the first scene from the tilt shot are of her red high heels. The tilt camera shot is paced to be very slow this creates dramatic tension because it leaves the audience anxious to find out who the person is. The weather in the scene is heavy rain, the rain droplets are blurred out and slowed down to focus the attention on the girls body. This also adds dramatic tension to the movie because the audience is unaware of why the camera is focusing on her. The sound in the beginning of the opening scene is non diegetic and the scene relies on fast, dramatic music to create a tone for the scene this tone again suggests that the audience are viewing a drama and possible thriller movie.

Scene 3

The camera then begins to scene a new slightly higher angle of the girls head. The pace of the scene is still slow however the scene shows her moving her head to look behind her where her eyes lock on to a man walking by. The scene then switches to a eye view shot of what she is seeing. The camera focuses on the man and blurs the background out. The sound is still non diegetic however the music becomes more sinister and is almost completely mute, It makes the audience feel inevitable that something is going to happen which once again adds drama to the scene and creates lots of tension among the audience.

Scene 4

The man continues to walk, aware that the girl is looking at him, he looks back. The higher angle shot of the girls head is shown and then suddenly she opens her mouth, hisses and lunges at the man, at this point the sound becomes non diegetic which would have made the audience jump. The shot then goes back to the girls eye view angle however she it is no longer her eye view as she is shown in the shot. She goes on to attack the man with her teeth, they both fall to the ground. The shot then switches to a birds eye view of the girl on top of the man where she goes on to attack his neck, blood is shown. The connotations of the blood suggest the audience are viewing a violence and action film.

Scene 5

The camera shot then goes from a bird eye view and then zooms out to become an ariel shot of a city, the pace of the shot is fast, the music becomes non diegetic and the previous music we heard before kicks in. This gives off a feeling of dramatic tension. The shot continues to show the city gradually loose electricity and enter a black out. This gives off the impression of evil, this is due to the fact that the connotations of darkness are evil, scared, ect. This makes the reader anxious to know what has happened to the city and if there were more victims.
